Harriet Burgess Towne was the older, married sister of William A. Burgess who was serving with the 59th Massachusetts Infantry during the Civil War. She received a letter from him dated July 9, 1864 in which he tells her of camp life and the battles which he has fought in. The first line reads "Give Willie a kiss from me."
This photograph shows Harriet or "Hattie," as she was called by her brother, with her young son William R. Towne.

Augusta S. Quimby (1833-1928) was 31 years old and unmarried when she helped to design and sew the Belfast Civil War soldiers quilt in June 1864.
Her talk, "Recollections of the Civil War," written in 1917, describes events and activities that took place during the war years. Of special interest is her description of the decision to create a quilt, "as a diversion from real work it was proposed to make a Flag Bed Quilt for a hospital."
This photograph was taken in Belfast on February 27, 1861.

Philo Hersey was born to a farm family in Canton and moved to Belfast as a young man. He was principal of Belfast High School in 1862 when he enlisted as captain of Co. I, 26th Maine Regiment. This was a nine-month regiment fighting in the western Louisiana campaign.
Despite receiving a severe arm wound at the Battle of Irish Bend, Hersey remained with his regiment until it mustered out in August 1863.
He returned to Belfast where he married Arbella "Belle" Johnson and raised two sons. In 1885, Hersey and his family moved to San Jose, California, where he became a successful fruit grower.
Despite living 3,000 miles away, Hersey traveled back to Belfast by train in order to attend reunions well into the 20th century. The History of the Twenty-Sixth Maine Regiment notes, "A better officer never drew sword than Colonel Hersey."

Major Frank W. Dickerson, son of Judge Jonathan G. Dickerson of Belfast, served during the Civil War with the Regular Army, Fifth U. S. Cavalry. Frank participated in twelve major battles, and in one engagement, had his horse shot out from under him. Pronounced unable to continue to fight because of the combined effects of a war wound compounded by a debilitating illness, he served his remaining time fulfilling behind-the-lines support responsibilities.
His enduring wish towards the end of his life was to return home. At age 24, on board a ship in Boston Harbor, with his father at his side, Frank died on February 11, 1866.

The view of the harbor and commercial district of Belfast was taken from Primrose Hill on High Street and shows downtown as it looked several years after the catastrophic fire on October 12, 1865.
That fire swept along the lower portion of downtown, destroying 125 buildings in a 20-acre section. In the years following the fire, the rebuilding of the downtown and waterfront was well underway.

A large group of "Fantastics" or "Horribles" pose at Memorial Hall in Belfast prior to marching in a Fourth of July parade. The group has not yet put on their masks.
Memorial Hall was the second floor meeting space used by the Thomas H. Marshall Post, No. 42, Grand Army of the Republic, a Civil War veteran's group. A portrait of Col. T. H. Marshall hangs to the left and a portrait of Gen. Joshua Chamberlain, to the right.
In 1890, the G.A.R. Post erected the building and used the second floor for meetings, reunions and veteran's assistance. The rest of the building was rented to the City of Belfast for municipal offices.

The Hayford Block was built on Church Street 1866-68 by local contractor, Axel Hayford. There were retail stores on the ground level and offices on the second floor. In the back section was Hayford Hall, later renamed as the Opera House, which occupied two upper levels.
The Opera House was used for a variety of entertainments including plays, operas, fairs, formal dinners, club meetings, public gatherings and dances. Its seating capacity was 1,300 and it had a stage, a large balcony and ample floor space. Roller skating was introduced in 1882 and the first basketball game in Belfast was held there in 1904.

Memorial Hall was built on Church Street in 1890 by the Thomas H. Marshall Post, No. 42, Grand Army of the Republic, a Civil War veterans organization, as its memorial to fallen comrades.
The post occupied the second floor for reunions and social events and various City of Belfast departments used the lower levels.
In 1934, as the numbers of veterans had diminished, the building was deeded to the City.

First Church was built at the corner of Church and Spring streets. The building is Federal style with a square clock tower, open octagonal belfry surmounted by an octagonal cupola with a wrought-iron weathervane. The congregation formed in 1796. The construction of the building began in June, 1818 and the new meetinghouse was dedicated on November 15, 1818.
In May of 1819 a Paul Revere Bell was hung in the belfry. In 1836 the town owned clock, designed by Belfast clock makers, Timothy Chase and Phineas P. Quimby, was installed.

Ladies Aid Society
The 1864 Belfast Civil War quilt was sewn by twenty three members of the Ladies' Aid Society of the First Church. It was designed as an over-sized and inspirational quilt, rather than as a standard Sanitary Commission cot-sized quilt.
Sewing began on June 17, 1864 and by mid-July it was ready to be sent to the Armory Square Hospital in Washington, D.C.
It was returned to Belfast in March 2011, after being stored in Montana with two families for more than 140 years. This photograph shows the quilt as it looked after conservation.

The 4th Maine Regiment advertisement in the October 10, 1861 edition of the Progressive Age newspaper.
The ad states, "The popularity of the Maine 4th, makes this a desirable chance for any one desiring to enlist." Capt. Andrew D. Bean and Lieut. R. H. Gray were the recruitment officers.
The 4th Maine Volunteer Militia was the only Civil War infantry organization to be mustered into service in Maine's Mid-coast area. The regiment was unique, for it was an all-volunteer unit, no military conscription was needed to fill the ranks.

T. W. Stuart
On the eve of the Civil War Belfast was a bustling, prosperous community of more than 5,000 people. Known for its shipbuilding and maritime commerce, it was an important trading center with connections to eastern seacoast ports and world wide harbors.
Nearly 30% of men living in Belfast were employed in the maritime trades. Much of this trade, vital to the local economy, would be interrupted following the news of the attack on and the fall of Fort Sumter on April 12, 1861.
This view of Belfast, taken from the east side of the harbor, was photographed by T. W. Stuart and engraved by Mallory for publication in History and Description of New England. Maine by A. J. Coolidge and J. B. Mansfield, published in Boston, 1860, by Austin J. Coolidge.

This stereoview shows a large group gathered in front of the Belfast Post Office Square on upper Main Street during winter. The brick building behind the crowd is Peirce's Block, built in 1852. On the first floor were storefronts and the second floor was a large hall used for dances, concerts, and public meetings.
On April 19, 1861, at the onset of the Civil War, Peirce's Hall was filled with a large group of townspeople gathered together to hear patriotic speeches and to show support of the government, the Constitution, and the Union. The hall also served as a recruitment center for the Belfast City Greys, the local militia.

Thomas Jefferson Burgess was a native of Belfast and a printer by trade. During the Civil War years, he was drafted, but exempted from service due to a bad hip. In 1862, Burgess published the Evening Bulletin, which was a daily broadsheet containing all the evening telegraph dispatches from the war.
Before the war, Burgess entered into business with his brother, George Washington Burgess, and together they established the Progressive Age newspaper, a competitor to the Republican Journal.

In 1862, small currency had been driven out of circulation and businesses issued printed checks. These were printed like miniature bank bills and were in denominations of five cents, ten cents, twenty-five cents and fifty cents. They were valid for one year.
This check was signed by Mrs. A. D. Chase, Belfast businesswoman, whose store was located at the corner of Main and Church streets.

Albert C. Burgess, pictured here, received a letter from his brother William, dated July 15, 1864. William Burgess was serving with the 59th Massachusetts Infantry at Petersburg and had just been shot by a Rebel sharpshooter. He considered the wound to be quite serious and wished to tell his family that he probably would not survive. Albert was to convey both the news and William's goodbyes to the rest of the Burgess family.
Albert Burgess served as a Second Lieutenant with Company B, one of the five Divisions organized in Belfast to enroll men into the un-uniformed State Militia in 1862. Following the war, he worked in the hardware business and had a store on Main Street for many years.

The Belfast and Moosehead Lake Railway Company built the thirty-two mile long railroad in 1870. The line was leased by the Maine Central Railroad, which carried mail, freight and passengers until 1925, when the City of Belfast assumed ownership. At that time, the Belfast and Moosehead Lake Railroad was the only publicly owned freight and passenger line in the country.
The passenger station was torn down in 1960 to make way for a grain elevator used for the poultry industry. The last train left Belfast on June 5, 2005.

This building at the corner of Main and High Street was built ca. 1805 as a dwelling for George Hopkins. During the War of 1812 it was owned by John Huse and used as a hotel and tavern. It was here on September 1, 1814, that General Gosselin met with town magistrates to negotiate the occupation of Belfast by his British troops. Later, it was occupied by A. A. Howes, merchant.
The other buildings on the block were built in the early 19th century and remained unchanged until 1894, when third stories were added to each.

Peter P. Hazen
Sgt. Peter P. Hazen wrote to Mrs. Harriet Burgess Towne on August 15, 1864 to describe the details of her brother William A. Burgess' death earlier that day.
Hazen was a fellow patient at Satterlee Hospital, Ward E, outside of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and was recovering from facial wounds he received at the Battle of Gettysburg. He had befriended her brother and felt the need to assure his family that William had received the greatest care from the Sisters of Charity, just as a mother, wife, or sister would have done.

Thirty-one members of the Civil War veterans organization, the Thomas H. Marshall Post #42, G. A. R. gathered together in Belfast ca. 1895. The Post was organized in 1881 and met for re-unions and special events until 1934, when the Post was disbanded.
A newspaper article dated June 4, 1942 described this photograph as being on view in a store window on Main Street. It was part of a patriotic-themed display to show support for Belfast men serving in World War II. All 31 men were identified in the article.
Of particular interest is Andrew Johnson, seated, far right. Johnson was a former slave who, after escaping, enlisted with the U. S. Navy and served for 30 months. He came to Belfast in 1868, married, and raised a family. He died in 1899.
Front, from left, are Henry Staples, Alexander D. Smalley, Martin C. Dilworth, Robert Whitehead, Nahum S. Parker, and Fitz W. Patterson.
Seated in chairs, from left, are Nathaniel Sholes, William Cobbett, Edward Woodbury, Isaac A. Conant, John T. Gilmore, Harry Clifford, Adelbert Knight, Samuel J. Gurney, George A. Wise, Wilder S. Grant, and Andrew Johnson.
Standing near the flag are Ezekiel R. Thomas, John W. Nash, and Samuel Morse.
In the back row, from left, are Andrew E. Clark, Alden D. Chase, Samuel F. Stevens, Adolphus W. Doe, James F. Churchill, David Edward Bird, James Pattee, Capt. George R. Carter, James G. Harding, Dexter T. Guptill, and William S. Aldus.
