On 28 October 1891 the four-year-old, 121-ton schooner Empress went aground on the Fox Rocks near the Nesmith cottage and St. Ann's Church at Kennebunkport.
The schooner was Bangor owned and under the command of a Captain Kelly.
The Empress, built at Rockland, was carrying 206 tons of hard coal from New York to J. A. Titcomb's coal wharf on the Kennebunk River at Kennebunkport. She missed the turn into the river in a heavy fog and came ashore on a rocky spit a half mile beyong the river's mouth. She was broken up by pounding waves.
The photograph shows her hull on the rocky spit and to the right the Nesmith cottage, which became the rectory of St. Ann's Church.

The cornerstone of St. Ann's Episcopal Church was laid on August 22, 1887 on a site donated by the Kennebunkport Seashore Company.
The church was consecrated by the Rt. Rev. Henry Adams Neely, Bishop of Maine on August 24, 1892, and has been in continuous use as a summer chapel since that date. It is one of 18 historic summer chapels in the Diocese of Maine.
Several building sites were proposed and there was discussion early on about a wooden structure. However, the gift of land by the Kennebunkport Seashore Company carried with it the rights to gather and use the stones at hand for construction, making construction of a stone chapel feasible.
The large sea-washed stones were hoisted and dragged to the church site during the winter of 1886-1887, and work on the building was begun May 27, 1887. Both interior and exterior walls are of this local stone.

The Rogers Fibre Company in Kennebunk was part of the manufacturing heritage and Industrial Age of the town.
Rogers Fibre Company bought out the Leatheroid Company in 1915. So well-known was the Leatheroid Company that many people in Kennebunk interchangeably referred to the leatherboard and fibre board it produced simply by the brand name leatheroid. Leatherboard is made from scraps of vegetable-tanned leather that are ground and pressed into sheets. Fibre board has no virgin materials; it consists of old paper bags, cardboard and scrap paper.
While leatherboard and fibre board’s histories are intertwined, they are two separate and very different products. Leatherboard was first made in Kennebunk in 1876 at the Leatherboard Mill. The National Fibre Board Company came along in 1881 and was incorporated into the Leatheroid Manufacturing Company in 1884.
By 1915, Rogers Fibre Company had united the Leatheroid Manufacturing Company, the National Fibre Board Company and the Mousam Counter Company.

When Maine became a state in 1820 as a result of the Missouri Compromise, Kennebunk ceded from Wells to become its own town. As a result, the previously-named Second Congregational Parish of Wells became the First Congregational Parish of Kennebunk.
The church was painted white in 1823 (it had been dark yellow before). It served as the center for official town activities. In 1827, the parish became a Unitarian church, splitting with the orthodox Congregationalists who built their own church on nearby Dane Street.
A bell cast from Paul Revere's foundry in 1803 was installed in the steeple, and as of 2016, it still rings. It is one of only 23 remaining Revere bells in the world.

The Lafayette Elm was named for General Lafayette's visit to Kennebunk in 1825. The Marquis de Lafayette, in the U.S. often known simply as Lafayette, was a French aristocrat and military officer who fought in the American Revolutionary War. A close friend of George Washington, Alexander Hamilton, and Thomas Jefferson, Lafayette was a key figure in the French Revolution of 1789 and the July Revolution of 1830. The tree was not planted to honor his visit but named for him.
In the 1960s, it was struck with Dutch elm disease and by the 1970s, most of the elm trees that lined the streets of Kennebunk's community were gone--including the famed Lafayette Elm. It is estimated that 1,200 trees had to be removed.
The Layfayette elm was measured in 1920, when it had a height of 131 feet and a girth of 17 feet, 3 inches, covering more than an acre of lawn near the old Storer Mansion.
Iconography of the tree appears throughout town as of 2016. Kennebunk Savings Bank uses the tree emblem in its logo, and it also appears in the official seal for the Town of Kennebunk.

Hugh McCulloch was born in 1808 in Kennebunk. He attended Bowdoin College, taught in Boston, studied law, and was admitted to the Massachusetts state bar in 1833. He then moved to Indiana and established a law practice.
In 1862 McCulloch went to Washington, D.C., as a lobbyist for state banks against the proposed legislation creating a national banking system. Despite his efforts the law was passed in 1863. It was intended to help finance the Civil War and provide a uniform, stable national currency.
Secretary of the Treasury Salmon P. Chase, impressed by McCulloch's abilities, asked him to help put the new system into effect as comptroller of the currency. Deciding that the new system was better than the old, McCulloch accepted the job. He persuaded existing state banks to apply for Federal charters, and more than any other single person he was responsible for the successful inauguration of the national banking network.
In March 1865 President Abraham Lincoln appointed McCulloch secretary of the Treasury. During his tenure, McCulloch maintained a policy of reducing the federal war debt and the careful reintroduction of federal taxation in the South.

Gordon Grant
circa 1830
This mural of the village of Kennebunkport from the river, as it might have looked circa 1825-40, was painted in the late 1930s by Gordon Grant for the Kennebunkport post office, where it can be seen today. It is a romanticized view, but includes landmarks such as the South Congregational Church (left), a circa 1840s shipyard, and the Captain Nathaniel Lord mansion of 1812-14 on the right (which is actually located farther down the river). The mural was painted at the behest of novelists Kenneth Roberts and Booth Tarkington and was photographed by the Willett-Art Studios of New York City.

The 735-ton, three-masted Louis V. Place was built in the George Christenson shipyard at Kennebunk Lower Village and launched on 30 August 1890.
The ship was stranded on Long Island, New York, during a blizzard in February 1895. She lay between 300 and 400 yards from the beach and crew members could be seen in the rigging.
Two fell into the sea and disappeared. Two were found by rescue crews frozen to death still lashed in the rigging. Two were rescued, but their faces, hands, and feet were frozen. Only one of these survived.
William H. Squires was the ship's captain.

This late photograph of the yard and some of its workers was made from a daguerreotype thought to date from the 1850s. It is a rare view of a yard at The Landing, which was the earliest and most prolific location for shipbuilding on the Kennebunk River (from 1790 to about 1860).

Thomas S. Bourne
circa 1900
In 1826, George and Jane Bourne built their fine Federal brick home at 104 Summer Street, just up the bank from the Bourne & Kingsbury shipyard, and in front of George's childhood home. A fire in 1852 destroyed the original barn, and the home itself was only saved from the fire by tearing down the connecting shed.
Bourne, a well-traveled ship owner, had seen the Milan Cathedral in Italy many times, and was inspired by the ornate carvings that decorated the structure. He rebuilt the barn and added a wing with gothic-style ornamentation, or "gingerbread" trim. His original Federal-style house did not match the new look, so he continued adding ornamentation to the main house, meticulously carving the pieces by hand, with help from one of his ship carpenters that worked in his shipyard. Bourne died not long after he completed the house.
Bourne home on Summer Street is better known as "The Wedding Cake House." It is among the most-photographed homes in all of Maine. A modern legend from the early 1900s has it that the Wedding Cake House was built to compensate a bride deprived of her wedding cake by her seafaring husband-a compelling story, but not true.
As of 2016, the home is a private residence not open to the general public.

In 1915 the people of Kennebunk formed a committee to organize the "Society Circus" designed to raise funds for playground improvements on Park Street.
The circus was held on August 19th at Parsons Field. There were outrageous performances and attractions. Many of the performers, clowns and musicians were local dignitaries, businessmen and their wives who devoted hours of time to the fundraiser, with more than 200 individuals involved in the Big Top performance.
The tent performances included many traditional acts including strong men, bronco riding, juggling, and acrobats. Visitors were reported from as far away as New York and Missouri. The net proceeds from the circus were projected at approximately $1100, a significant amount in 1915.

The parade, according to contemporary press accounts, brought out a crowd of more than 6,000 spectators and was judged to be one of the most popular events in town's history. Tickets for the circus were sold out despite the fact that the large tent covered 8,000 square feet.
Visitors were reported from as far away as New York and Missouri. The net proceeds from the circus were projected at approximately $1100, a significant amount in 1915.

In 1834 the United States Government acquired the title to Goat Island at the entrance to Cape Porpoise Harbor, one of 16 islands within the limits of Kennebunkport.
Cape Porpoise was a main port of call for ships and a beacon was needed to guide them into the harbor. Congress appropriated $6000 to build a lighthouse on Goat Island. Whale oil was burned for the light. In 1860 the lighthouse was remodeled and lard oil replaced the whale oil for its fuel.

The Kennebunkport drawbridge spans the Kennebunk River and connects Lower Village of Kennebunk to Kennebunkport's Dock Square. Two unknown men posed with a view of the mouth of the Kennebunk River in the background.
Over the years, several shops were located directly on the bridge including a candy store. On March 1, 1896 a freshet carried away the drawbridge. It took a year to construct a new bridge which opened April 17, 1897. Unfortunately, this new version was washed away again in 1900. In 1933, a modern steel swing bridge replaced the drawbridge.

A parade was crossing the bridge that spanned the Mousam river, going south on Main Street in Kennebunk.
The Davis Shoe Company stands as the tallest building to the left. Shoe manufacturing played an important role in Kennebunk's manufacturing heritage. On May 3, 1903 there was a large fire in the Davis Shoe Company building which destroyed most of the buildings in this photograph, with others nearby suffering heavy damage.

Union Mill Company, Kennebunk, York County, ME, USA
circa 1895
In January of 1889, the first stones of the Union Mill building were laid in Kennebunk for a new shoe company. Alfred and Warren Kimball were the first lessees creating the Kimball Shoe Company.
Union Mill Company, as the building was known, was unique because it appears to be the only factory that had a weathervane in the shape of a large boot on the tower. The building was formally dedicated on April 10, 1889 with the expenses paid by the town. It was the largest gathering of people to date, under one roof within the boundaries of Kennebunk, with 1,800 people attending. The mill employed about 200 people.
