Grace Hall Stratton was born in 1878 and was the adopted daughter of Wesley and Mary Jeanette Stratton. Seen here in her 1895 graduation picture from Caribou High School, she enjoyed Shakespeare, algebra and "skeeing." Asked if she was engaged she replied, "No, Sir." Her career goal was to become a milliner.
Pursuing her chosen career, Grace studied millinery style in Boston from 1895 to 1897. Returning to Caribou, she worked at Mrs. E.M. Hines Millinery in Washburn.
She also sang at community events and performed in a local production of Gilbert and Sullivan's, "H.M.S. Pinafore" in 1898.
She later ran a kindergarten in a former storehouse in 1900. In 1904 she returned to Boston to further her studies in art and design and worked for many years doing fine needle work and restoration of valuable tapestries at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts.

The Laffaty Brothers were wagon builders in Caribou in the 1890s and 1900s. This model uses potatoes to indicate the great load-bearing capacity of the wagon design.
Note that the wagon is of "drop-axel" design; the freight bed is lower than the wheel hubs. This design was popular at the time because the the wagon had a lower center of gravity and it was easier to load.

On the front of the digger a "... wide steel pointed shovel (point) was set to run at a safe depth below the potatoes in the row. It loosened the soil and by the horses hauling the digger at a slow walk, the whole row, including the potatoes, vines, rock and soil are carried onto the elevator. The elevator was a continuous steel lag chain moving toward the rear of the machine. The soft dirt dropped between the lags of the moving elevator, aided by the continuous up and down movement of the agitating sprockets bolted to the frame under the steel lags. The rocks, potatoes, vines, and large chunks of hard dirt were deposited on the top of the soil." George Whitneck, "A Farmer Lives in Maine."
The Gasoline engine on the digger opperated the mechanisms. Earlier versions of potato diggers were powered by the rotation of the digger's wheels.
The horses haul the digger with its shovel in the ground. The engine bolted on top of the frame furnished the power to run the elevator.

A snow roller pulled by horses owned by John Hamilton. The driver is Albert White.
A road roller was an improvement over a snowplow because it packed down the snow on the roads to make a wide, hard, smooth surface. In a snow storm, banks made from plowing a road trapped the blowing snow and the road would drift in.
The road roller did not make large snow banks. Rolled roads also were wider than plowed ones, allowing cars to more easily pass one another and did not confine teams of horses or upset sleighs, pungs or sleds.
A road roller was made from planks bolted to a drum-like frame.

A farmer uses a riding hoe on his potato field in Caribou in about 1930.
After a potato field has been cultivated, the loose dirt is piled around the base of the potato plants to protect the potatoes growing near the surface from being damaged by the sun. While not a technically difficult job, it was typically done during the hottest days of June and horse flies constantly tormented the horses.

For seed, potatoes are cut so there are at least one but generally two or more "eyes" in each piece. At planting time, a potato planter was used.
Farmers, "dumped the barrel of cut seed in the seed hopper behind the seat and two sacks of fertilizer in the fertilizer hopper in front of it. ... control[s] let some seed in the picking chamber..., [the farmer] lowered the furrow opener (plow) in front and the covering disks in the rear and placed the planter in gear automatically.
"The fertilizer was forced from the hopper into two rubber tubes that ran down outside the coulter openers (sidling disks) that split open the fresh soil and deposited the fertilizer so that it would not come in contact with the seed.
"The spacing of the seed in the row was dependent upon the size of the sprocket wheel used on the intermediate shaft.
Inside the potato planter, "...pickers, revolving on the main axle, passed through the picking chamber containing the seed. As each picker passed through, it picked out one piece of seed, and when the picker passed downward, the seed was forced off the picker point and dropped down into the trench made by the furrow opener (plow) and covered by the disks at the rear."
