The Curved Bridge over the Ossipee behind Bonney Memorial Library, looking south toward Cornish village in March 1936. This bridge, built in 1930, is unique in that it is curved and was originally known as the only curved bridge in Maine.

This is a copy of a plate from a book written by Sherman Grant Bonney. "Calvin Fairbanks Bonney, Harriet Cheney Bonney: A Tribute" Limited Edition published in 1930 by The Rumford Press, Concord, NH. The plate faces p.143.
Warren's bridge is named for Colonel Joseph Warren. He owned a grist mill on a pond just to the left of this picture. The mill was originally built by Theophilus Smith, Jr. and later sold to Colonel Warren. The bridge spans the Ossipee River between Cornish and South Hiram. In the picture, you are looking towards South Hiram. Bonney Meadows is on the right just before crossing the river. The meadows are named for Dr. Calvin Bonney, who endowed the town library. This bridge is further west from the curved bridge, also over the Ossipee.

Station Bridge from Cornish to West Baldwin during the floods of Spring, 1936. The house on the far right is seen to be flooded half way up the first floor. Frank Smith recalls that this house has been flooded many times in his memory, yet it still stands. The men on the bridge may have been carrying the mail from Cornish Post Office to Cornish Station. They did not dare put a vehicle on the bridge during the floods. Franks grandfather was the postman and said that when you walked across the bridge and logs and debris hit the bridge you could feel the whole structure shudder, which made them feel a bit apprehensive.

The view is looking east from Cornish into West Baldwin. The house on the far left, known as the Dow house, is still standing. The big barn on the right was torn down in the late 1990s.
The house on the far right was partially flooded and still exists.

Covered bridge, built in 1898 over the Saco River, between Cornish and West Baldwin. In the view, Cornish is on the left and West Baldwin on the right. This wooden bridge replaced the "Hemlock" Bridge that was about a quarter of a mile below it (south).
The Hemlock Bridge was taken out in the flood of spring 1898. Most of the debris ended up on the dam at Steep Falls. The railroad station was on the West Baldwin side, just upriver. It was known as Cornish Station even though it was in West Baldwin. The bridge is known as the Station Bridge.

Station Bridge during the flood of March 1936. Townspeople had organized sandbagging operations on the approaches to the bridge and were watching to see if the bridge would hold. The water did not cover the bridge or its approaches.
