Eastern Maine General Hospital's Graystone (Mace) Building and Surgical Building are pictured here circa 1899. There was "something over $20,000" set aside for the building of the building of a brick building to relieve overcrowded conditions and to provide suitable surgical rooms. Work began on the foundation in 1897 and the stone wall on State Street was dismantled and used in its construction. In 1898 the Women's Aid Society agreed to furnish the new wards (for $1,893). Private rooms were furnished by individual donors. The building officially opened in October 1899. This hospital is now known as Eastern Maine Medical Center which is a member of Eastern Maine Healthcare Systems.

To solve an acute need for housing for nursing students, the 1925 construction began on the Nurses Residence at Eastern Maine General Hospital (EMGH) on State Street in Bangor.
The building was completed at a cost of $235,000 and opened in October of 1926.
The 1926-1927 EMGH annual report heralded the opening of the Nurses Residence as the "outstanding event of the year."
Eastern Maine General Hospital is now Eastern Maine Medical Center and no longer houses nursing students. The Nurses Residence building now serves as The Riverside Inn, a convenience for patients at Eastern Maine Medical Center and their families.

The U.S. Cadet Nurses Corps was established by Congress in 1943 to relieve the wartime nursing shortage.
Cadet Nurses received a free education in exchange for a promise to remain in the military or essential nursing for the duration of the war. At the program's end in 1948, Eastern Maine General Hospital on State Street in Bangor had graduated 154 nurses as members of the Corps.
The unidentified nurses in this photograph represent one of the classes at EMGH during WWII.
EMGH became Eastern Maine Medical Center in 1969, which is now a member of Eastern Maine Healthcare Systems.

The Mace family constructed this graystone mansion on 2.5 acres on State Street in Bangor, overlooking the Penobscot River, in 1861. The home was later sold to the Sterns family. Bangor General Hospital and Nurses School opened in the Stern House and received their first patient on June 7, 1892 and was incorporated on December 16, 1892. Before their lease ran out, Bangor General Hospital purchased the building in 1894. In 1897 Bangor General Hospital was granted a charter by the Legislature and became Eastern Maine General Hospital. Eastern Maine General Hospital later became Eastern Maine Medical Center (1969), which is now a member of Eastern Maine Healthcare Systems. The Mace Homestead, or "graystone" as it is fondly called by local residents and hospital employees, is the cornerstone of Eastern Maine Healthcare Systems' existence.
