Hamlin
An old wooden box, hinged on one side, is covered with stones and minerals which include quartz, smoky quartz, rose quartz, black tourmaline and mica. The stones are held to the box with cement. The box was in the attic of Hannibal Hamlin's home in Bangor which was given to Bangor Theological Seminary in the will of Ellen Emery Hamlin. It was with a collection of other Hamlin artifacts which included photographs, desk items and old books belonging to the Hamlin family.
Hannibal Hamlin's older brother Elijah discovered the first tourmaline in North America on Mount Mica near Paris Hill. He mined tourmaline and other minerals with his cousin and later his son Augustus. The rocks and minerals which decorate this box are plentiful in the area around Paris Hill.

This photograph shows the Oxford County Jail building on Paris Hill as it looked before 1900. The building was made of granite blocks brought by oxen from Horse Hill in Oxford in 1822. It was surrounded by a picket fence and a rectangular sign visible on the front of the fence says "All persons are positively forbidden talking with the prisoners."
A door behind the fence opened to the downstairs where there were four cells, two on either side of a walkway. The jailer's desk was located at the end of the walkway. An outside door and stairway built over the downstairs door led to two cells upstairs. There was no inside stairway as the second floor was made of large granite slabs.

Paris Hill Thespian Club
This Paris Hill Thespian Club printed program is dated Feb. 12, 1864. Two plays are listed; "Nine Points of the Law" by Tom Taylor, and "The Two Buzzards." The plays were given at Academy Hall on Paris Hill at 7 1-2, with doors opening at 7. Parts and performers are listed, and admission is 15 cents, 10 cents for children.
The Paris Hill Thespian Club began in the Hamlin home. Dr. Cyrus Hamlin enjoyed theater and invited friends & neighbors to his home to be performers and audience. When Paris Hill Academy opened in the spring of 1857, the old Thespian Club was revived and the large hall upstairs became the location of theatrical productions through the early 1900s.

This colored postcard of the Hamlin homestead has the number "5058" printed in red in the corner. "South Paris, Maine." is printed to the right of the number in red, then "Residence of Hannibal Hamlin" is also printed in red. Just below these words are handwritten words in black which say "As it was in the 1800."
Dr. Cyrus Hamlin, Hannibal's father had the house built in 1806, and the family sold it in the 1860s. It was a farm until it was purchased by Kimball Atwood in the 1920s. He enlarged the house, removed the barn and ell and replaced them with a four-car garage and covered breezeway.
He also added porches along the north and south walls supported by large square columns. In the 1970s the house was sold to its present owners.

Photograph on postcard with the words "Hamlin boulder on the way to Paris Hill" written on the right edge. The boulder was set up on the common in front of Hannibal Hamlin's birthplace. The boulder was moved from an apple orchard off Mink Farm Rd. on the south side of Paris Hill by ten draft horses.
The Military Order of the Loyal Legion and citizens of the town of Paris mounted a bronze tablet on the boulder which begins,"Hannibal Hamlin born near this spot August 27, 1809." The tablet lists Hamlin's elected offices plus "Minister to Spain" and "Friend and Counselor of Lincoln." Then are written the words, "Honoring the Man, the Patriot, the Statesman," followed by the donors of the tablet, and finally the date, "August 27, 1909."

Percival J. Parris
This drawing shows Paris Hill Common and the buildings around it as they would have looked between 1822 and 1838. The drawing is attributed to Percival J. Parris, (ca. 1849-1945).
Under the drawing is written the words; "Jailer's House," "Jail 1822," "First Baptist Church 1803," and "The Deacon Willis House 1810." The "jailer's house" on the left is an earlier version of the building that now stands next to the old jail.
The jailer and his family lived in the house and the jailer's wife prepared the prisoners' meals.
The granite jail was built in 1822, replacing an older wooden jail.
The Baptist church pictured was removed in 1838, and the new building, now standing, was dedicated in December 1838.
The Hamlin homestead is not visible; it is located behind the church building. The Deacon Willis house is to the right of the Hamlin home.

This black and white winter photograph of the First Baptist Church of Paris Hill shows the church and common as they look today. This church building was dedicated in December, 1838. Originally it had only a bell tower. The clock was added to the top in 1883 and was given to the town by Hon. Hannibal Hamlin. The bell still chimes the hour to this day, (2009).
Beyond the church are several homes built in the early 1800s. To the left of the church is a house built by Benjamin Doe in 1829. Partially visible to the right of the church is a house built in 1827 by Jesse Cummings. To the right of that is a house now known as the "Lyons Den" owned by Harry Lyon, who navigated the first flight across the Pacific, from California to Australia, in 1928. The house was originally built as a store in 1807 by Simeon Cummings.

Cyrus Hamlin
Cyrus Hamlin wrote to Thomas Clark of Paris on Jan. 15, 1826 to obtain much needed cloth for the Hamlin family.
He apparently ordered the cloth from a Mr. Mayall with Thomas Clark as the middle man. His friendship with Clark is implied in the half-joking nature of his appeal. He goes on to ask Clark to use his influence in the legislature to help him get the cloth.
The letter is two pages, handwritten. He concludes with a reference to Dr. Chandler who is in poor health and signs the letter, "C. Hamlin" and the date.
Cyrus Hamlin was father of Hannibal Hamlin. Cyrus' wife Anna and several teenage daughters were living at home at this time.
