While the 1930 McCann was not Bangor's first motorized fire engine it does have the distinction of never having left the City of Bangor.
Built in Portland for $10,900 the 1,000-gallon-per minute pump Engine 1 gained some fame in 1962 when it was pressed into service to supply water for 96 1/2 hours to the City of Bangor when a water main from Brewer to Bangor broke.

American LaFrance
The engine was shipped from the American LaFrance company in Elmira, New York, on June 13, 1947. The City of Brewer has been the only owner. In active front line service until 1966, and on active reserve until the 1980s, it remainsl an inactive reserve pumper.
The V-12 American LaFrance engine was replaced around 1960 with a Continental gas engine. It pumps 1000 gallons per minute.
Originally numbered Engine 1, it was renumbered 303 under the Penobscot County numbering system in the 1970s.
This truck was sent from Brewer to the Bar Harbor Fire on October 21, 1947. It remained there until October 28, 1947 and was instrumental is helping to save the central portion of the town from the great fire.

Fire at Wingate Hall at the University of Maine in Orono, Feb. 17, 1943.
"The third oldest building on campus, Wingate was built in 1892 on the same site as White Hall, the first building on campus. Wingate was designed by noted Bangor architect, Frank Kidder. Perhaps foretelling, White Hall burned in 1890. Wingate suffered a similar fate on February 16, 1943.
"At the time of the fire, Wingate housed civil engineering, engineering drafting, physics, the Technology Experiment Station, and the offices of the Dean of Technology.
"Fourteen at the time, son Paul [Cloke] remembers that his father had gone to lunch at Merrill Hall, after working all morning on an important speech. On coming out of Merrill, he saw smoke and immediately recognized that it must be Wingate. One of his first thoughts was that his morning work was literally "up in smoke." To his surprise, the engineering students had moved everything from his office to Lord Hall, and carefully placed his speech back on his desk, just like he had left it! Others were not so fortunate. Civil engineering alum, Russ Bodwell '44, recalls that spouse Barbara (Higgins) Bodwell '45, lost her drafting tools in the fire and had to borrow his for the rest of the year. "

Following World War II, many fire departments found the rugged Jeep used by the doughboys overseas to be the perfect vehicle for fighting forest fires.
The Portage Lake Fire Department outfitted this 1946 Jeep Willys with equipment to fight forest fires as well as equipment to use on structure fires. The City of Bangor had a similar Jeep with an attached trailer containing water, a booster line and reel.

The Old Town Fire Department's first motorized fire engine was a 1917 Garford Pumper. It was one of only two other Garford Fire Engines in existence (one is in Australia), as of 2002.
The Garford cost $3,310 and the Fire Department used it until 1959, when it was sold. In the early 1990s, Old Town Firefighter Bruce Johnson led a team in the restoration of the venerable engine.
Items of interest on the Garford included wooden spoked wheels, a wooden steering wheel, and brass oil lanterns along with the electric headlights.
The truck belongs to the Hose 5 Fire Museum.

Fire at Wingate Hall at the University of Maine in Orono, Feb. 16, 1943.
"The third oldest building on campus, Wingate was built in 1892 on the same site as White Hall, the first building on campus. Wingate was designed by noted Bangor architect, Frank Kidder '79. Perhaps foretelling, White Hall burned down in 1890. Wingate suffered a similar fate on February 16, 1943.
"At the time of the fire, Wingate housed civil engineering, engineering drafting, physics, the Technology Experiment Station, and the offices of the Dean of Technology, Paul Cloke.
Civil engineering alum, Russ Bodwell '44, recalls that spouse Barbara (Higgins) Bodwell '45, lost her drafting tools in the fire and had to borrow his for the rest of the year."

This is an 1900 rubber bucket. They were kept in people's homes and used in the event of a fire. The earlier buckets were made of leather and always kept in the home and in the event of a fire everyone would bring them outside to be filled with water and passed from person to person or what was called a bucket brigade.
