This blacksmith shop was located in the mid-section of Islesboro known as Guinea.
Blacksmiths were common on Islesboro much longer than in the rest of the country. Automobiles were prohibited on the island until 1933. Being an island, Islesboro had to provide many of its own goods and services, since transportation to the mainland was sporatic until the 1880s, when steamboats began making scheduled runs between the island and the mainland.

This blacksmith shop was located in Guinea, a mid-island settlement of Islesboro. The shop was next to F.S. Pendleton and Company, a general store that served the island for over 100 years. Blacksmiths were in demand longer on Islesboro than on the mainland because automobiles were prohibited on the island until 1933.

This photo, taken in 1933, is of a town meeting held at Islesboro's Town Hall. At the meeting, the islanders were debating the current ban of automobiles on the island. Islesboro was one of the last places in the country that actively prohibited automobiles. Summer residents believed that the horse and buggy was a much more rustic and traditional form of transportation. However, the islanders believed that it was an inadequate and out-dated form of transportation. After twenty years of debate, Islesboro residents voted March 17, 1933 to repeal the ban on automobiles.

In 1902, the town of Islesboro voted to fund a town library, to be located in the Pendleton school. After finding the schoolhouse too hard to heat, the town moved the books to this small house owned by Captain Fields C. Pendleton, who rented it to the town for $3 a month. Although the building was too small to properly house the collection, the library remained there for sixteen years. Alice L. Pendleton was the first librarian.
The sign on the building reads "Islesboro Free Library 1902."

For many years, Big Tree, which stood in a large clearing near the shore of Seal Harbor, served as a landmark for sailors around the northern end of Penobscot Bay. The tree was approximately 90 feet tall and could be seen from a great distance. The tree was struck by lightning in 1929, but stood until 1944 when it was brought down by a hurricane.
Big Tree is now the name of a public beach, across the road from where the tree stood.

Roxy Parker was one of many islanders who "knitted" nets and other items as a means of income. She is using the back of a chair to hold the twine while she is "knitting." Twine was distributed to these knitters, who worked at home and turned in the finished products.
In 1888, P.D. Hatch began a family business that grew over the years to employ 100 people on the island. When the 1938 Federal Minimum Wage and Hour law passed, the Hatches could no longer afford to pay their knitters, and so the business folded.

Islesboro's Free Baptist Church was built in 1843 in the northern portion of the town. Elder Ephraim Coombs served as the first preacher. Organized in 1821, the congregation originally met in the homes of its members. In 1847, it is said that an itinerant French painter decorated the interior with stenciling and scroll work. The church now hosts a series of summer lectures and concerts.

In 1905 Alice L. Pendleton started lobbying for a properly-sized library facility, and fund raising commenced in earnest in 1912. With the help of many residents and a $2,500 loan from Alice's brother Fields S. Pendleton, construction of the granite and brick building began and the doors opened January 14, 1918. The library was called the Islesboro Free Library until 1956 when it was renamed the Alice L. Pendleton Library.
Also seen in the photograph to the right is the World War II Honor Roll (which no longer exists) and to the left the memorial flagpole, designed by world-famous artist Charles Dana Gibson (who summered on nearby 700 Acre Island) and dedicated to Islesboro's residents who served overseas.

Maine State Ferry Service
This is a tri-fold ferry schedule for Islesboro's second ferry, the Governor Muskie. This image shows the schedule laid open and flat.
The Muskie was built after the Maine State Ferry Service was established and took over from the Town of Islesboro, building a new pen and ramp system. The Governor Muskie was built by the Wiley Manufacturing Company, Port DePosit, MD. It could hold twenty-four vehicles, was 119.4 feet long, had a 40 foot beam, and had a 560 hp engine. The Governor Muskie began service to Islesboro in 1959 and was replaced by the Margaret Chase Smith Ferry in 1987.

This lobster net is made of cotton twine and has one inch square mesh holes. It was used in wooden lobster traps to prevent lobsters from leaving the trap once they had entered.
Netting was a cottage industry on Islesboro from 1888 to 1938, employing up to 100 people. 100 pound bales of twine would be shipped to Islesboro and distributed to "knitters" who could work in their own homes and were paid by the pound. The enactment of the Federal Minimum Wage and Hour Law put an end to the $5,000 island industry.

These were the very instruments used by Reverend Samuel Williams, Professor of Mathematics at Harvard College who, in 1780, made the first scientific observation of a solar eclipse in North America. Dr. Williams ascertained that the eclipse would best be viewed on Islesboro, his actual site being a few hundred yards east of where a granite monument commemorating the event has since been placed. Dr. Williams had to obtain permission to conduct his observation on Islesboro from British officers who controlled Islesboro at that time. The Harvard instruments used by Dr. Williams were brought back to Islesboro in 1980 by professors and students from the university to reenact Williams’s observation of the 1780 eclipse.

Meadow Pond is located in the northern section of Islesboro. Before refrigeration, ice was harvested from Meadow Pond and shipped to southern ports. A dam was built across the end of the pond to raise the water level and increase its size. A sluice connected the pond to a west shore wharf, where vessels were loaded with the harvested ice blocks and set sail for Boston, New York and even as far as the Carribean.

In 1952, the town of Islesboro was given a gift of this building by Mrs. Lillian S. Whitmarsh to be used as an island school (the building was originally a private residence). Previously, elementary schools dotted the island, and the the current high school (now the Islesboro Historical Society) was in bad shape. All grades kindergarten through twelfth were to be housed in this new location. The school opened in 1954.

American Net and Twine Company
This letter is from the American Net and Twine Company to P. D. Hatch, giving specifications on what type of product the company wanted P.D Hatch's employees to produce.
The Hatch family started a netting businesses on Islesboro in 1888. Twine was shipped to Islesboro and distributed to "knitters" who were given instructions on what to make. These knitters often worked from home and then turned in the final product to the Hatches, who then shipped the products to the companies that ordered them. The 1938 Federal Minimum Wage and Hour law put an end to this $5000 yearly industry and put approximately 100 people out of work.

This doily is made of off-white cotton thread, starting in middle, with concentric circles or bands of netting worked out. It is an offshoot of the netting industry on Islesboro.
The thread is much finer than the thread used to make lobster nets, and the shuttle, or needle, was much finer as well. Decorative items were made mostly to sell to Islesboro's summer community, usually on order.
Made by Clara J. Colcord, who was born May 17, 1877 on Islesboro.

Yeaton Dodge
This netting stand was constructed by Yeaton Dodge for his daughter Faustina in the mid-1800s. It has metal hooks at the corners where "knitters" would secure their twine. Chairs were placed around the stand, allowing several knitters to work from the same stand.
Netting was a cottage industry on Islesboro for over 100 years. Twine was shipped to the island and distributed to knitters who would produce a variety of netted objects on demand. The industry closed with the passing of the Federal Minimum Wage and Hour Law of 1938.

This buggy, also called a roundabout, was found in a shed on Islesboro and is believed to have belonged to Bill Dick Pendleton or Mathew O'Hara. It is black with a wooden box on iron framework. The top is collapsible. The floor is carpeted and there is room under and behind the seats for storage.
Buggies such as this one were used on Islesboro long after the transition to automobiles on the mainland. Islesboro's summer community perferred the peace and tranquility of horse-drawn vehicles rather than autos.

The original Islesboro Inn, built in 1889-90, burned to the ground on September 30, 1915. The Inn had been built by the Islesboro Land and Improvement Company, with the purpose of drawing wealthy people to Dark Harbor (located in the southern section of the island) and selling them large, expensive lots on which to built summer cottages. The Islesboro Inn was rebuilt in 1916, in the Colonial Revival style.

The second Islesboro Inn opened in 1917, after the first Inn had burned to the ground in 1915. The Islesboro Inn was the cornerstone of the Dark Harbor summer resort, established in the 1880s as Islesboro's third summer community.
In 1955, after years of disuse, the second Islesboro Inn was razed. The Great Depression had taken its toll on the Inn, followed by World War II, from which the Inn never recovered. The only remnant of the Inn left is the ballroom, which has been converted to a private residence.

Pendletons' Livery Stable was built in 1904 by Captain Charles R. Pendleton and run with his sons Thomas, Ralph, Howard and Lloyd. It was located in Dark Harbor and serviced the summer community. During the busy summer months, drivers slept in rooms over the stable and a full-time cook provided their meals.
In 1934, after the automobile ban was lifted on Islesboro, Pendletons' Livery Stable turned into a taxi service. Today it is a boat yard, operated by Captain Pendleton's great-grandson.

This postcard shows the settlement of Guinea, located mid-island. The Pendleton School is the building on the left located on Main Road near County Road. The first Islesboro Free Library was located on the second floor. The small white building on the right was the second home of the library.
Settlements on Islesboro such as Guinea were common in the days before cars. These settlements had to be self-sufficient because mobility was limited. In most cases, the settlements had their own stores, churches, schools, post offices and wharves.

This long postcard is in two pieces. When the two pieces are connected at the bridge, they create a 180 degree view of Mill Creek, a settlement on the west side of Islesboro. Mill Creek is tidal and empties into Gilkey Bay.
The large gambrel roofed building on the water was a coal shed owned by Ed Eames, one of the first coal dealers on Islesboro. He used his sloop Nautilus to bring coal and passengers from the mainland.
The small white building in the background is Eames' store. Remnants of the coal shed can still be seen at low tide.

Turtle Head is located at the northern tip of Islesboro. It was so named by Thomas Pownal, Governor of Massachusetts in the mid 18th century, because he said the shape exactly resembled a turtle.

Mill Creek opens into Gilkey Harbor, part of Penobscot Bay, and is therefore tidal. At the turn of the 20th century, the settlement of Mill Creek consisted of houses, a coal wharf, grist mill, stores and a school. The houses remain today, and the wharf pilings can still be seen at low tide.

Lobster traps such as this were used on Islesboro for decades. It is made of wood, and has two compartments, a "kitchen" and a "parlor." The lobster crawls into the kitchen, attracted by bait, and then passes into the parlor, where it is trapped by a net. The trap is weighted at the bottom by bricks.
Lobster men on Islesboro used to construct their own wooden lobster traps, and used nets made on the island to secure the lobsters. Today, they buy metal traps.
The buoy shown is from the 1940s.

Samuel Warren, Jr.
This map shows the plots of land owned by the first settlers of Islesboro. It was originally drawn up in 1799 by Samuel Warren, Jr., himself a settler on Islesboro, to settle a dispute with General Henry Knox over ownership of the island. Islesboro lies north to south, rather than east to west as this map indicates.
