The “Assemblies” started in the early 1890s and continued until 1912. In 1915 George Walter Hinckley used the Dunn Auditorium for summer services, but after that time it was not used regularly and fell into decline. The Dunn Auditorium was torn down in 1923.
One notable speaker at the Assemblies was Gen Joshua Chamberlain who spoke on July 27, 1902.

Gen. Robert Baden-Powell (1857-1941), founder of the Boy Scouts, as he was pictured in an elaborate invitation to a reception and dinner for him at the Hotel Astor in New York City, February 9, 1912. A copy of this invitation was found in George Walter Hinckley's papers and it is believed that he attended. Among the speakers for the evening were Gifford Pinchot, Ernest Thompson Seton (Black Wolf), Dan Beard, and Luther Gulick.
Hinckley was closely associated with these great figures of that day. It may have been at this time that he made arrangements for Black Wolf to attend the Good Will assembly that following summer.

George Walter Hinckley, the founder of Good Will Homes, was involved in the early Boy Scout movement. Through this work, he met Ernest Thompson Seton, the writer and outdoors man. Seton came to Good Will to talk with the boys and establish this fireplace area in 1911. In 1912, before Seton returned for a visit with the boys, Hinckley had this fieldstone chair, the Black Wolf Seat, built at the fireplace as a monument to Seton. Today, the whole Good Will-Hinckley Homes campus meets at Seton fireplace for a cookout at the start of the school year. Good Will was founded in 1889 in Fairfield, Maine by Rev. George Walter Hinckley.

A group of what might be Good Will Farm employees pose at the monument on July 19, 1928.
The three Murray Tablets are named for "Adirondack Murray," William Henry Harrison Murray (1840-1904), whose ideas about the health and spiritual benefits of the outdoors affected Good Will Farm founded George W. Hinckley.
Hinckley considered Murray very influential in his life. One of the tablets has a brief biography of Murray on it.
The Murray tablets were dedicated Sept. 16, 1920.

Charles D. Hubbard
1918
Artist Charles D. Hubbard designed the Good Will Roundel, intended to symbolize the mission of Good Will Farm, a home and school for underprivileged children in Fairfield.
This version of the Roundel, which Hubbard painted in 1918, is installed over the fireplace in the Supervisor's Office in Prescott Hall.
It was unveiled May 30, 1918. The painting survived the 1920 fire in Prescott Hall.
The words, "Industry, discipline, recreation, home, education, religion" along with the symbols are the "Good Will Idea."
The painting includes trees to represent forestry, a plough for agriculture, a machinist's hammer for mechanical interests, a baseball bat for organized athletics, and books for science and literature.

The Kent building at Good-Will Hinckley, designed by architect Edgar A. Josselyn, was originally built to house a woodworking shop. Later it was used for dendrology (tree) collections and included "The Four Seasons" tree paintings by Charles D. Hubbard. This was one of three small museums that G.W. Hinckley, an avid naturalist, created on campus. The building was later used for a student vocational shop and currently is in use for maintenance functions.

In the spring of 1892 Good Will bought the Daniel Chase-Getchell farm, which stood where the Quincy building (now the L.C. Bates Museum) was later built. During the summer of 1892 a second floor was added and the building was partially converted into a schoolhouse. This newly expanded building was renamed Prospect Cottage and was dedicated on September 1, 1892. With other additions and improvements Prospect Cottage became the first true school building at Good Will.

On November 10, 1890, George Walter Hinckley, founder of Good Will-Hinckley, purchased about 90 acres of land, complete with buildings, near East Fairfield Village. Attached to a large, square house that was on the property was a large shed and stable. These buildings made it possible for Hinckley to establish a small independant farm that was carried on for decades. This small complex became Willow Wood, home of Mr. Hinckley and his family for many years.

From even before the First World War, Rev. Hinckley had spoken of the need for a more centrally located school. Dr. George G. Averill, general manager of Keyes Fiber Company, and his wife Frances, donated money for the school in 1930. This school, designed by Bangor architect Crowell Lancaster, became the center of educational life at Good Will. The Averills continued to make donations to the school throughout their lives and during World War II were mainstays of Good Will. Internally rebuilt and joined to a new middle school at its west side, again with leading gifts from Harold and Bibby Alfond, the combined structures were rededicated in September 2000 in honor of the Alfonds and their children.

The Patrons of Husbandry, or the Grange, was first started in Maine in the 1860s and achieved great social and political influence from 1890 until about 1930. Grange Cottage was originally built, furnished and decorated thanks to many local Grange associations and is today supported by Maine State Granges.
Grange Cottage had the misfortune to burn down twice, once in 1912, after which it was rebuilt, and again in 1987, after which it was rebuilt again. This photograph is of the first Grange Cottage.
