Hammond Photo Lewiston, Maine
This is a photo of Dr. Daniel Frank Davis Russell as a young boy, born Sept 2, 1879 to Alonzo Proctor Russell and Mary Ann Goddard Richardson Russell.
After a lifetime of practicing bedside medicine in Leeds, he died in 1975. The D.F.D. Russell Medical Center is named after him. His impact on the community is immeasurable, serving not only as a healer par excellence, but as a town officer.
Many stories are told of his committment to the health of this town. He stayed by the bedside of many a sick or dying patient through the long nights, back in the days without antibiotics, modern facilities and effective methods of surgery.

A handbill advertised that Mrs. R. S. Greenlaw was coming to North Turner on December 10, 1861 and had taken rooms at L. J. Pollard, by the North Turner Bridge.
Mrs. Greenlaw "administered" vegetable remedies and was a clairvoyant.
John Y. Merrill's 1861 diary mentions consulting with Mrs. Greenlaw and various other spiritualists who visited the area in the years following his wife's death in 1860.

John Young Merrill
This is one of 11 diaries kept by John Young Merrill of Leeds between 1855 and 1865. His daily entries discuss chores he carried out around his farm, the seasonal rhythm of life, and his many other activities.
Although he was listed as a farmer on the 1860 census, he was involved in a variety of other occupations, including peddling fish, building and moving barns, digging wells, and making and selling herbal salves.
The diary also provides a glimpse into the politics of the era and depicts the decline and eventual death of his wife, Nancy, presumably from TB.
In the months following Nancy's death, John writes repeatedly about visiting Spriitualists who traveled to the Leeds, Greene and Turner area at that time.

The card has "and John Collins house" penned in on the front along with the printed "Lane's store and post office Leeds, Maine". To the right of the store is a small enclosure which may be gas pumps.

This image of the West Leeds saw mill, owned by Roscoe E. Swain, shows operators standing in front of the building. Swain's Mill was a box and dowel factory that was built on the location of many previous mills going back to 1814.
It was a convenient home market for local lumber. It closed in 1916 when the market began to demand cardboard.
A skeleton wagon with horse and driver are in the background, possibly to pick up sawed lumber. A bell is mounted on the roof of the building to signal workers.

Until the 1920s when automatic husking machines were installed inside the factory, corn was husked by hand at the H. F. Webb Corn Shop in Leeds, in what was known as a husking shed.
Children often worked part-time, walking down the road during their lunch break from the McKinley School in Leeds Center to the corn shop.
