This is an admissions recruitment pamphlet written by Maine Central Institute's principal, Professor Frederick U. Landman. Professor Landon served as an MCI teacher from 1898 until 1900 and MCI's principal from 1900 until 1913 and oversaw a period of great growth for the School.
When Landman assumed the position of principal in 1900, the School had seventy students and five academic teachers. When he left in 1913, MCI boasted two hundred and fifty students and twelve teachers. Also during his time, the girls' dormitory, now known as Alumni Hall, was constructed.

Kingsbury Bachelder
This is a handwritten letter of recommendation from the Principal of Maine Central Institute (MCI), Kingsbury Batchelder, for Allie N. Pike, an MCI graduate of the class of 1879. The letter was written April 14, 1884, nearly five years after she graduated.
The Maine Central Institute was founded in 1866 by Rev. Oren B. Cheney, an abolitionist who founded Bates College in nearby Lewiston. The first building, the Institute Building (Founders Hall), was completed in 1869 and served as the primary campus building until 1958. Since then the school has expanded on many occasions. As of 2013 is still in operation and serves as a co-educational independent boarding school.

This Western Union telegram was sent to Maine Central Institute's principal Edward Stanley by President Dwight D. Eisenhower congratulating the school on the completion of the J. R. Cianchette Hall of Science in 1958.
The Senators mentioned would be the famous Senator Margaret Chase Smith, good friend and trustee to the school, and Senator Frederick G. Payne, who had previously served as Governor of Maine. The building itself was designed by long-time MCI science instructor Paul Legge.
Although a new Math and Science Center was constructed in the early 2000's, as of 2013, J. R. Cianchette Hall is still used for classrooms.

This photograph is of Maine Central Institute (CMI) Alumni Secretary, and later MCI Headmaster, Edward Stanley receiving a gift of $100 for the school at Mary Weymouth Dodge's 99th birthday. Dodge was celebrating "entering her 100th year." This photograph was taken at Mrs. Gilbert's Hospital in Yarmouth where Dodge had made her home.
Dodge was the daughter of one of MCI's founders, the Reverend Nathaniel Weymouth, and graduated from MCI in 1874 in a class of only five students. She married Dr. Mark T. Dodge, class of 1876, who practiced medicine in Troy Maine for twenty-five years. At the time of this photograph, Dodge was MCI's oldest living alumnus. She passed away in 1956 and was buried in Troy Maine.

Colonel Walter G. Morrill, a medal of honor recipient and final commander of the 20th Maine regiment during the Civil War, was known as a harness race promoter. He was the first person in Maine to put on a race featuring all women racers.
The jockeys used bike sulkies with pneumatic tires to race at various trotting parks around Maine. The woman on the far left is Mae Gould Woodcock from Ripley, who was known in the area for her skills in horsemanship as well as finding lost objects. The other racers names are unknown.

George N. Pushaw
The commanding officer of Pittsfield militia Company A, George N. Pushaw, sent this draft notice to Willard B. Cross on September 13, 1862.

H.H.. Nutter, Pittsfield, Maine
Originally built in 1868 by Isaac H. Lancey (1827-1898), the Lancey House cost $15,000. It served the area for nearly a century as a hotel and restaurant.
The Lancey House sustained $25,000 in damages when it burned in October 1906, leaving Pittsfield without a hotel for nearly five years, as it did not re-open until 1911. The Lancey House continued to serve the area for many years but then sustained another blaze on October 30, 1965 and by the following October was demolished.
In 1885 Colonel Walter G. Morrill built a livery stable adjacent to the Lancey House. Morrill operated the stable for a number of years. Morill also ran the Union Trotting Park on Peltoma Avenue in Pittsfield, and later became well known throughout the state as a harness race promoter.

Metropolitan News Co., Boston, Mass.
The unveiling of the Soldiers' Monument and the dedication of the new Pittsfield Public Library on May 28, 1904, "marked an epoch in the history of Pittsfield" as described by a local newspaper. The dedicatory exercises at the library were held in conjunction with the Memorial Day observance that year.
The Soldiers' Monument is a seven and one-half foot bronze statue of a Civil War veteran at a parade rest, which sits atop a decorative base made from Hallowell granite. The Stephen Davis GAR Post #11 and the Woman's Relief Corps #16 were instrumental in initiating and raising funds to erect this memorial statue.
The Soldiers' Monument is part of the Memorial Day Parade route in Pittsfield, where each year veterans and children march, stopping en route to place a wreath at its base.
