The bridge that crossed the Swift River in Hale was swept away in the freshet of 1870. A covered bridge was built to replace it the same year. It was located a short way above the house of Fred Porter, in a place on the Swift River that was considered more accessible to Rumford and Mexico. A cheese factory operated by George Richards was located nearby, and on the opposite side of the bridge was a small district schoolhouse.
Porter Bridge was demolished in an ice tornado in November, 1900. In 1901, after much controversy it was agreed that a high steel framework bridge should take its place, and the Red Bridge was built further downstream.

This postcard is of the Gregory Inn located on River Road, which was once known as the Morrill Farm. For many years it was the summer home of General Charles Wilson, who was born in Mexico Corner in 1848, and eventually in the 1930's became a hotel for tourists known as the Gregory Inn. As of 2013, it is still known as the Gregory Inn and functions as an office building.

From March 11 to March 23 1936, the Androscoggin River overflowed its banks. This image depicts the Ridlonville to Rumford bridge as it was being swept down the Androscoggin River on March 19. Rising water in the Oxford Paper Co. mill yard swept 5,000 cords of pulp wood into the angry river, creating a maelstrom of logs and ice that smashed against the 43 year old steel Ridlonville Bridge, and carried it downstream.
The flood was a product of 17 snow and rainstorms that blew into Maine during the first three weeks of March 1936. The rapid freezes and thaws coupled with the increased water levels from the storms finally led to the Androscoggin River overflowing its banks on March 12 at which point the destruction from the swollen river, awash with pulp and ice, ensued.
In the background of this photograph is the Packard block.

"Gateway to the Western Mountains," announces this welcome sign between Mexico and Rumford. This is one of four such signs placed around the perimeter of the town separating it not only from Rumford, but also from Dixfield and Roxbury. Visitors are encouraged to head to the Mexico Recreation Park off of Route 17.
Established in 1818, Mexico has long been strategically located to benefit from its proximity to Rumford's paper mills. Its location at the confluence of the Swift River provides another advantage: the town is the gateway to the Rangeley Lakes region to the north on Route 17 and west on Route 2 to the Sunday River Ski and Golf Resort area in the town of Bethel.

The houses created by the Goodwin brothers along Main Street in Mexico.
In 1898 Eliphat Perkins Goodwin and his brother William Woodbury Goodwin moved to Ridlonville from Carthage and purchased six lots of land. By 1903, they had constructed six identical Colonial Revival duplex houses with hip roofs and small facade porches. These homes were rentals and much desired by the millworkers.

This photograph shows the" Red Bridge" on Bridge Street in Mexico during 1936 flood. The rising water did not seriously undermine the bridge; The First National Store and the Esso Station can also be seen in this image.
The Red Bridge was built in 1901 spanning the Swift River between Mexico and Rumford. It replaced the Porter Covered Bridge which was located further upstream and was destroyed in November of 1900 in an ice tornado. In 1961, the Red Bridge was rebuilt and the high steel framework was replaced by more modern masonry.

This photograph shows the aftermath and devastation caused by high water, ice and logs from the 1936 flood on Main Street in Ridlonville.
The Goodwin Houses can be seen on the left hand side of this photograph. As well as the Tydol Gas sign in the back right.
Not only were many homes and buildings ruined by the flood. The Ridlonville Bridge was also swept away in this disaster and high volumes of debris from bridges, buildings, and in particular the Oxford Paper Company, up stream were deposited in the area.

This postcard shows the Red Bridge that spans the Swift River connecting Mexico to Rumford, as it looked in 1901.
The Androscoggin River forms Mexico's southern boundary with Rumford and the smaller Swift River more or less follows its western boundary with that town. Mexico's downtown is located on land formed by the northeast corner of the right-angle junction of the two rivers. These low lying riverbanks in Mexico have flooded many times, including 1936, 1953 and 1987. The Red Bridge replaced the Porter Covered Bridge which was located further upstream and was destroyed in November of 1900 in an ice tornado. In 1961, the Red Bridge was rebuilt and the high steel framework was replaced by more modern masonry.

This photograph postcard depicts the Abbott School around 1930. The Abbott School was built in 1907 on the same property where the Central School, which was razed by fire on Christmas Eve in 1906, had been located.
The five rooms on the first floor of the building housed the lower grades or Grammar School, while the upper grades made up the High School which occupied seven rooms on the second floor. In 1911 the name of the school was changed from the Central School to Abbot School in honor of Elizabeth Abbot who donated the land upon which the Central School was built.
In 1937 a new High School was completed and the Abbott School became the Grammar School and Junior High school. The number of grades taught at the school continued to decrease over the years until 1980 when, since a new elementary school had been built, the building was closed and sold. The building was soon after destroyed by fire in the early 1980's.
The front of the postcard reads "The Mexico High School Building"

This postcard of the Mexico Baptist Church shows how the buildings looked around 1903. The Mexico Baptist Church was built on a lot of land located on Roxbury Road next to the Mexico Corner Cemetery. It was purchased from Joshua Hall for $25.
Lumber was cut and donated by Mr. Daniel Austin on January, 1889, the building was started in May of that year. The first pastor was Reverend Albert Warner who came to Mexico in 1903. As of 2012, three additions have been added to the original Chapel.

This photograph depicts a building that appears to be a shop at the turn of the century in Mexico. This building is typical of those seen during the early 1900s in Mexico Village, or Mexico Corner as it was called at that time.
The banners hanging on the windows indicate that on the second floor of the building housed a Pool Hall and a Barber Shop, and the first floor was Meat Market and an Ice Cream Parlor.

Ridlonville was once part of the town of Mexico. This image of Main Street faces south.
The second building is the Howard Hall Opera House, built for recreation and dancing by John L Howard. It featured a covered stairway. In 1926, the Strathglass Pipe Band of Rumford and Mexico practiced playing and marching in the hall. The hall was later used for basketball games and also as sixth grade classrooms until the Abbott School was rebuilt. On the first floor of the hall was Archie Mann's Bakery and Knauer's Beer Garden.
The building on the south side of the hall is A. E. Davis Dry Goods, established about 1901. It burned in 1907 and was rebuilt with brick. Howard Hall also burned down in 1978.
As of 2013, the Far East Restaurant is housed in the A. E. Davis Building and uses the lot where the hall once stood for parking.

In 1887, Fernando C. Richards bought this sawmill in Hale from Blanchard Kimball. He sawed long lumber and singles at first and also ran a threshing machine. Later, he fitted the mill for sawing birch and was the first on Swift River to saw birch. In 1894, he sold the mill to Mason Brothers and went in with his son Fernando Allen Richards, who had built a a mill below Mexico Corner.
Pictured from left to right are a Mr. Bradeen, Fernando C. Richards, and two unknown persons.

On June 1, 2006, a rock with a plaque reading "Rildonville Settlement 1894" was placed at the foot of Day Hill near the site of the former Hotel Ridlon. Members of the Mexico Historical Society held a dedication ceremony in memory of the section of Mexico once known as Ridlonville.
Beverly Melanson author of Remembering Ridlonville was present for the ceremony as well as Mexico Town Manager Joe Derouche, who played a significant role in the placement of the rock.
