Eugene P. McGillicuddy (1867-1893) is shown here dressed here in the uniform of the Portland Montgomery Guards, an Irish-American militia organization formed in 1872 and known for public demonstrations of close order drill throughout the United States and Canada in the late 1800s.
McGillicuddy worked in Portland as a contractor for much of his short life, and died of typhoid fever and pneumonia in 1893 at the age of 25.
Organizations like the Montgomery Guard provided many young Irish men the opportunity to belong and contribute to the society that gave them hope of a better life, and often kept them from the detrimental consequences of poverty and prejudice of the day.

Patrick H. Flaherty (1869-1941) grew up in the Irish neighborhood of Portland's Munjoy Hill neighborhood close to the Roman Catholic Cathedral. He never finished grade school and worked much of his life as an undertaker.
Many Irishmen contributed to the Portland community by way of public service. Flaherty became active in the Portland Fire Department early in his life. In 1911, he was appointed chief, the first of Irish descent in Portland, and, in 1927, became the first president of the Maine Fire Chiefs Association.
Flaherty is pictured here in the uniform of the Portland Montgomery Guards, a local militia group comprised of young men of Irish descent.

John A. Conway (1869- 1904) was raised on Plum Street in Portland, within a short walking distance from the highly concentrated Irish neighborhood referred to as "Gorham’s Corners." Conway spent much of his working life as a teamster, driving wagons along the prosperous Commercial Street railway corridor on the Portland waterfront. He died of consumption (tuberculosis) at age 35.
Conway appears here in the uniform of a Portland Montgomery Guard, a local militia group comprised of young men of Irish decent. Formed in 1872 and eventually absorbed into the Maine National Guard, the Montgomery Guards presented demonstrations of military drills and sponsored grand receptions throughout New England and Canada in the late nineteenth century.

St. Dominic's is situated in Portland’s West End District, at the corner of Gray and State Streets. It was known for welcoming immigrants of all backgrounds and religions to Portland for generations. Having been decommissioned as a Catholic church in 1997, St. Dominic’s is now (2013) the home of the Maine Irish Heritage Center.

John K. Gately is photographed here in the uniform of the Portland Montgomery Guards- a local militia group and precursor to the Maine National Guard- popular for the military drill demonstrations and grand formal dances sponsored throughout New England and Canada.
John K. Gately (1867-1898) grew up in an Irish family in the Munjoy Hill neighborhood of Portland. He worked as a boilermaker and fireman. Gately moved to Lynn, Massachusetts shortly after this photograph was taken.
Although many young Irish men joined civic groups like the Montgomery Guards to avoid the sometimes fatal consequences of poverty and violence in the crowded immigrant neighborhoods, many indeed still died young. Gately drowned with the sinking of the ill-fated S. S. Portland during “Portland Gale” on the night of November 26/27, 1898 off the coast of Gloucester, Mass. He was 31 years old.

Thomas F. McGillicuddy (1869-1930) resided on Neal Street not far from St. Dominic’s Roman Catholic Church in Portland’s West End neighborhood and worked as an Inspector for the US Customs Service for much of his career. He is photographed here in the uniform of the Portland Montgomery Guards, a local militia and drill team comprised of young men of Irish decent.
McGillicuddy dedicated much of his life to military service. In 1888, he joined the First Maine Volunteer Infantry Regiment and worked his way through the ranks. He was called to active service in May, 1898 during the Spanish American War along with the 46 officers and 979 men of the First Maine. They were sent to Fort Thomas, Georgia, on the Chickamauga Civil War battlefield for training. As armistice with Spain ended the short conflict in August, 1898, he was never deployed.
McGillicuddy retired from military service as First Lieutenant in 1904 and left a military pension to his wife, Margaret, upon his death in 1930.
