This image of Portland Breakwater illustrates the new lighthouse structure built in 1875, modeled after the Greek Choragic Monument of Lysicrates from the fourth century B.C. Known locally as "Bug Light," the cast-iron tower sits on a cylinder surrounded by six fluted columns. The station was established in 1855. The lighthouse was automated in 1934 but discontinued in 1942. Bug Light was "relighted" in 2002.

A kokoshnik, a traditional headdress, along with the sarafan, the folk dress, that Samantha Smith, 11, of Manchester, was given when she visited Moscow in 1983.
The Moscow Pioneers (a Soviet Union youth organization) made the pearl-decorated kokoshnik.
Smith had written to Soviet leader Yuri Andropov expressing her concerns about nuclear war. He wrote back to reassure her and invited her and her parents, Jane and Arthur Smith, to visit the Soviet Union in July 1983.
Samantha wore the costume several times and appeared in it on the cover of Soviet Life magazine. The dress and pearl headdress are the Russian national costume.

Maine. Legislature
The Maine Legislature issued a proclamation honoring Samantha Smith, 10, of Manchester, calling her "Maine's foreign diplomat."
The proclamation noted that Smith's letter to Soviet Union leader Yuri Andropov had been published in the Communist Party newspaper Pravda and had received national attention. She had asked him his intentions about war and had advocated for peace.
Several months later, Smith and her parents, Arthur and Jane Smith, traveled to the Soviet Union as Andropov's guests.

After several failed attempts and pressure from competing explorers, Maine resident Rear Admiral Robert E. Peary claimed his arrival at the North Pole on April 6, 1909.
Peary reached the 90° latitude with the help of Matthew Henson, his African-American assistant, and four Inuit men: Ootah, Egigingwah, Seegloo, and Ooqueah. Although still debated, the United States Government officially recognized the group in 1911 as the first to reach the North Pole.
This autographed photo of Rear Admiral Robert E. Peary in eskimo costume was most likely issued for publicity purposes.

Steve Benson
Steve Benson of the Arizona Republic sent Samantha Smith, 11, of Manchester, the original editorial cartoon he drew satirizing Soviet leader Yuri Andropov's letter to her about war and nuclear weapons.
The cartoon shows Yuri Andropov at his desk, writing. Over four frames, the text reads, "Dear Samantha - Thank you for your letter. Don't worry. We don't want to conquer the world. We don't want to use nuclear weapons. We stand for peace and freedom. Say, why don't you come visit us? We'll show you around one of our model summer [the word "gulags" crossed out] youth camps. Your pen pal, Yuri."
Benson wrote Samantha a note on the bottom of the cartoon.
Samantha Smith and her parents, Jane and Arthur Smith, visited the Soviet Union at Andropov's invitation in July 1983. Samantha spent several days at Artek, an elite Young Pioneer camp on the Black Sea.

Gertrude Hill
Sir William Phipps (also spelled Phips) served as Governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony from 1692 to 1694.
This portrait is a copy by artist Gertrude Hill of an original portrait by Thomas Child.
Born on February 21, 1651 on Maine's colonial frontier near Woolwich, Phipps became a shipbuilder and soldier. He was knighted in 1687 for recovering sunken treasure off the Bahama Islands.
He won a decisive victory as commander of Massachusetts troops against the French at Port Royal, Nova Scotia in 1690.
As Governor in 1692, it was his decision that brought the Salem Witch Trials to an end.

Charles Gerletti
This alcoholometer set made by Charles Gerletti of Glasgow, Scotland consists of a cylindrical mahogany box four inches in diameter, holding numbered glass bulbs used for testing the alcohol content (proof) of distilled spirits. The buoyancy of each bulb corresponds to the density of a specific alcohol content in such a way that each bulb will sink in spirits matching or exceeding its designated proof. A numbered list on the inside of the box lid gives the strengths of spirits the kit can measure, ranging from "very weak" to "spirits of wine" (purified ethanol). The numbers on the list correspond to the numbers on the glass bulbs but not to a known system of measuring proof.
Charles Gerletti of Glasgow, Scotland, was born outside Great Britain circa 1792. He made barometers, other measuring instruments, and mirrors in Glasgow between 1828 and his death in 1848.
Although it is not currently known whether this alcoholometer set was ever used in Maine, it is similar to sets that were in use as of the late 18th Century. For instance, the estate of Daniel Haggens (1755-1787) of Berwick included "1 box of glass bubbles to prove spiritous liquors" that was appraised at a value of 3 shillings.

Valentina Tereshkova
Valentina Tereshkova of the Soviet Union, the first woman in space with a three-day flight in March 1962, wrote to Samantha Smith (1972-1985) of Manchester in December 1983.
She reiterated the desire of the Soviet people and leaders to live in peace and said the Soviet people were fighting for peace.
She also wrote, "Today, when the threat of a nuclear catastrophe has increased even more, the efforts of all people of good will are required to defend life on earth."
Samantha Smith visited with Tereshkova, also the head of the Soviet Women's Committee, in Moscow in July 1983 when Smith and her parents went to the Soviet Union as guests of Soviet leader Yuri Andropov.
Smith had written to Andropov asking him if he planned to start a war and made a plea for peace.

Dana Summers
Dana Summers of the Orlando Sentinel wrote a note to Samantha Smith, 11, of Manchester, on the bottom of an editorial cartoon he drew about her trip to the Soviet Union in July 1983. His note reads, "To Samantha with Best Wishes (most kids weave baskets at Camp on their Summer Vacation!) -- Dana."
The text of the cartoon, which shows Smith talking at a press conference, reads, "I wanted Mr. Andropov to understand that nuclear proliferation is the most important issue ... at least that's what it says in Amy Carter's notebook that the White House gave me!"
President Jimmy Carter in 1980 had asked his then 13-year-old daughter Amy what the most important issues was and she replied that it was the control of nuclear arms.
Samantha had written a letter to Soviet leader Yuri Andropov asking him about his plans for war and advocated for peace. Andropov replied and assured her that he wanted peace and invited her to the Soviet Union.
During his 1976 presidential campaign, Jimmy Carter had turned to his 12-year-old daughter Amy to ask her what she thought of nuclear weapons. Amy was a strong advocate for disarmament.

Admiral Peary designed his ship, the S.S. Roosevelt, to withstand the extreme conditions of the Arctic. Built with funds raised by the Peary Arctic Club, construction of the Roosevelt began on October 15, 1904.
She was launched on March 23, 1905. Built on Verona Island using Maine lumber, the Roosevelt carried Peary and his crew on the successful 1909 voyage to the North Pole.
After 1909, a series of owners used the Roosevelt for a variety of purposes. She served as a salvage vessel, a fishing boat, and a tug boat. During World War I the S.S. Roosevelt was used to patrol the West Coast.

Image of the keeper and the Fog Signal Station on Manana Island taken by Eric Hudson (1862-1932) In 1898, the lighthouse keeper was Daniel Stevens who served there between 1890-1902.
"Dressed in oilskins, the keeper of the U.S. Lighthouse Service's Fog Signal Station looks out to sea from his elevated vantage point on the west side of Manana Island. In 1854 Congress voted to establish a fog signal on Manana; it was installed the following year in the form of the large bell seen in this photograph. Cast in 1855 at Henry N. Hooper's foundry in Boston, the bell was struck by hand to give the warning. The historic bell was acquired from the U.S. Coast Guard by Monhegan Associates in 1969 and moved by helicopter to Lighthouse Hill on Monhegan Island in 1972, where it is displayed on the grounds of the Monhegan Museum. The bell is the subject of one of Eric Hudson's early Monhegan canvases, and it has become a familiar icon through the powerful simplicity of Jamie Wyeth's 1967 oil painting "Bronze Age." (Earle G. Shettleworth, Jr. in the book, "An Eye for the Coast: The Maritime and Monhegan Island Photographs of Eric Hudson", p. 130)

A bellarmine was a type of jug that the used for shipping, storage, and serving before glass bottles were made available in the 17th century. They were usually gray. The outer surface, and sometimes the inner surface, was salt-glazed. Molded medallions were put on the body, and human faces were put on the necks.
There were 213 shards of bellarmine found at the Popham colony. The majority of the shards (63 percent) were found at the vice admiral’s house, 13 percent at the admiral’s house, 11 percent at the buttery, 6 percent at the storehouse, and 7 percent elsewhere. Some shards that were found together were placed on a modern reproduction of a bellarmine.
Some shards found at the Popham Colony were pieced together to form this jug.

Ninety five percent of the fragments of iron or steel found at the Popham Colony were identified as armor. A helmet cheek piece was found along with a buckle that was most likely part of a military harness. Most of the pieces of armor were found on the storehouse floor, mostly in the south-eastern corner. Ten pieces were found at the Admiral’s house, 15 were in the vicinity of the vice admiral’s house. Only one piece was found in the buttery, which is a closely guarded building used for storage for the butts or casks of spiritous liquors.

A nearly complete, but fragmentary bottle was recovered from one of the buttery postholes from the Popham Colony. This bottle has been reconstructed from the fragments.
It has a distinctive blue-green color and was flattened so that it has an oval cross section. The neck is not ribbed and the rim is unfinished, which means it was left the same way that it was when it was cut off the pontil. Although the neck was 2 mm thick, the body of the bottle was only 1 mm thick. It was likely that such a delicate bottle was covered and protected by a wicker covering. Fragments of wicker have been found with pieces of what appear to be very similar bottles at a 17th century site in France.

A small caulking iron was found on the floor of the storehouse at the Popham Colony.
Caulking irons were used to put caulking between the planks of a ship in order to make it water tight. This is the most tangible evidence of the pinnace, Virginia, which was built at the Popham Colony.
The caulking iron is badly rusted, but kept enough of its shape so it would be recognizable. It is 13 cm. long and 5 cm wide.

This silver shilling was minted between 1592 and 1595 in England and shows Her Royal Majesty Queen Elizabeth. It was found at the 1607 Popham Colony site in what is today Phippsburg during a June 2010 excavation. The shilling may be the second oldest coin ever found in Maine.
On the reverse is a bead circle and a plain square with the top shield quartered with the arms of France and England, over a long cross with: POSVI DE ADIVTOREM MEV (translation, I have made God my helper)

There were 743 fragments of clay tobacco pipes found at the Popham site in Phippsburg. Of the 743 fragments, 256 of them date to the 17th century. The rest of them are from the 18th and 19th century. All but three of the pipes were made in Europe out of kaolin clay. The other three post-date Fort St. George and are an entirely different type.

Roves were metal pieces used like washers. They were used in shipbuilding and together with the caulking iron remind us of the success of the Popham Colony and the construction of the pinnace, VIRGINIA. They were commonly found in the central part of the Popham Colony's storehouse.

The largest pieces of preserved wood from the 1607 Popham Colony were the bottoms of the posts that supported the structures the colonists built.
The top of the stubs were often charred by fire that destroyed the buildings.
Enough of some posts remain to determine that they had been hewn to a roughly square or rectangular cross section. The bottoms were sawn flat. The posts from the sidewalls of the storehouse were pitch pine. A ridgepole post from the north gable end was spruce.
