This big, old building housed the former high school in Norridgewock. This is a view from Upper Main Street.
In 1866, the people of Norridgewock raised money to build the Eaton School. It had no grades and specialized in science and language. The first four pupils graduated in 1870.
The building burned in 1945. It was located at the site of the current Skowhegan Savings Bank.

The Norridgewock fire station was built in the 1900s on what was known as the Watts Block. In 1909 the entire block burned and the station, equipment, and most of the south side of Main Street were destroyed. In 1926 the fire station was rebuilt where the Fire House Bakery is today. Today our fire station is beside Brookside Video. Many descendants of these early firemen still live in Norridgewock today.

The train station was built in 1907 on Depot Street. The location was that of the Burhnam and Morrill Corn Shop. The first train master was Reuben Spaulding.
The first trip by train went to the gravel pit and back. This trip was extended to Kineo in the early 1900s.

This bridge in Norridgewock was built in the 1870s and stood until it was torn down in 1929.
The original covered bridge spanned the Kennebec River beside the Quinnebassett Hotel. The railroad trestle was built up-river from the bridge toward Madison and doubled as a walking bridge.
Anyone crossing the bridge faster than three miles per hour was fined. The sign over the arch reads "Three Dollar Fine for Riding or Driving Over This Bridge Faster Than A Walk."

Small white leaf-shaped dish with handle and gold timr along the edges. This dish was made in England. I shows a picture of the Eaton School, built in 1866. The Eaton School changed its name to Norridgewock High School twenty years later. The population of the school outgrew the building. The Grange found they had overbuilt their hall on Main Street so the two organizations exchanged buildings in 1916. The picture designating this as Norridgewock High School would have been taken during that thirty year period of 1886 to 1916 when fences along the road were popular. The flag pole is erected from the inverted "V" above the door and shows the two chimneys. Trees and houses on each side show dimly.

In the South side of Norridgewock, the best known of the hotels was the Sawyer House and Livery Stable located on Maine Street between Mechanic and Hotel Streets. As of 1845, when Norridgewock was the shire town of Somerset County (1807-1872) the town had three clergymen, four counselors at law, and three practicing physicians. The town had three houses of entertainment, or hotels, which catered to travelers and offered the best of accommodations. History books say that a "Mr. Sawyer has built a large house of entertainment in the South Village, which is well-furnished and good attention is paid there to the wants of travelers." The hotel burned in the late 1800s. Charles Sawyer, a professional photographer whose pictures are highly collectible today, was born there in 1868, later moved to nearby Farmington and opened a studio in c1904. He died in 1954 and is buried in Norridgewock at a family plot in the Riverview Cemetery.

Alice Johnson
Painter Alice Johnson of Norridgewock purchased this gown on the occasion of a trip to Paris for an international juried exhibition at which she won honorable mention, bringing back numerous pictures and other memorabilia.
This couturier gown was made in Paris.
Alice, daughter of Amos and Fedelia Johnson, was born at 36 Maple St. in Norridgewock and lived there until her death in the house next door to the east. Her brothers built that home for her.
She probably learned to paint where she was educated, at the Eaton School where humanities and fine arts were emphasized.

A round, white porcelain dish that was made in England was used for commemorative purposes by the Odd Fellows Hall of South Norridgewock.
The dish has scalloped sides with gold trim. The bottom shows a large willow tree and the old Congregational Church.
Settlers donated their labor, lumber and rocks for the foundation of the church and records show that rum and molasses were purchased for the occasion.
At first, the structure served several denominations - the Congregationalists, Methodists, and Baptist groups. After numerous renovations, two-thirds of the first floor served as a town hall and one-third as a vestry.
By 1836 the large sanctuary was completed on the second floor and in 1840, two wide staircases led up to the main auditorium which would seat some seven hundred people.
In 1945 the first floor of this church was used for classrooms when the consolidated school burned. Two years later, in 1947, the church burned as well.

A piece of wood with tapered edges similar to a bottle. It was taken from the old covered wooden bridge that was torn down in 1929 and replaced by one built of concrete. Local artist Alice Johnson asked the workmen to save small pieces for her and she painted lovely scenes on each one, often not signing them. On this one she put her initials. The outdoor scene shows trees with leaves, a body of water, dirt road and sky of sunset colors. Donated by Natalie Sheaff Schofield, formerly of Norridgewock.
