The wooden sardine carrier "Jacob Pike" was built for Moses Bernard Pike (1897-1989) of Lubec, owner of Holmes Packing Company, Eastport. He named it for his father, Jacob Clark Pike (1854-1928), a one-time sea captain who became a major sardine businessman in Lubec. The 85-foot ship with 17-foot beam could carry over 60 tons of refrigerated herring, leaving one foot of freeboard but contributing to stability in rough seas. Built in 1948 by Newbert and Wallace in Thomaston, she served until Holmes went out of business in 1997. Widely respected for her efficiency and fine lines, since 2009 she rests at the Penobscot Marine Museum.

Workers at the Newbert and Wallace shipyard preparing the launch of the sardine carrier, Mary Anne in Thomaston. The vessel was built for Moses Bernard Pike of Lubec for his Holmes Packing Company, and named for his daughters.
Herring, caught in a net or seine, were pumped by a vessel called a seiner into the hold of a sardine carrier for transport to factories. Most sardine carrier boatyards used steam-bent timbers. The Newbert and Wallace firm of Thomaston, used sawed 6 x 6-inch timbers exclusively. The stiffer construction reduced leakage.

The Mary Anne, built for Lubecker Moses Bernard Pike’s Holmes Packing Company in Eastport, was the first sardine carrier to refrigerate the herring in the hold.
Icy salt water and air circulated up through the herring and kept the catch chilled.
Named for Pike’s two daughters, Mary and Anne of Lubec, the ship was built by Newbert and Wallace Shipyard in Thomaston.

This is a view of the east side of Main Street in Rockland looking north.
The three-story, brick buildings on the right, beginning at the right and moving north, include: the Berry and Cobb Block (sometimes called the Masonic Block) with Cobb, Wight & Norton Ship Stores & Grocers on the first floor; the Custom House Block with fancy hood moldings above the second and third story windows; the three sections of the Kimball Block; and the lighter colored Wise & Kimball Block.
The two American flags hanging from the Custom House Block have their stars arranged in different patterns. The carriages are processing to a ceremony at Achorn Cemetery.

This stereo view shows the large, three-story, brick Berry Block at 404-420 Main Street in Rockland, ca. 1875.
At the right edge of the building is Limerock Street and further down Main Street is the steeple of the First Baptist Church.
The first half of the Berry Block was constructed in 1853 following a major fire. One year later, in 1854, it was expanded to include 412-420.
The first floor contains Ephraim Barrett Dry Goods, Edward R. Spear Books and Stationery, a clothing store, and two telegraph offices.
The two-story, wooden building, partially visible on the left is the Spofford Block. It was rebuilt after the fire of 1853. It contains the millinery shop of Julia Freeman & Co. on the first floor.

This image shows the east side of Main Street. The three story building in the center is the Berry and Cobb Block, built in 1872 by John T. Berry and Francis Cobb. The Berry and Cobb Block was often called the Masonic Block because Masonic meetings were held on the third floor from 1873 until the Masonic Temple was built in 1911. When the photo was taken in 1875 the first floor was occupied by Cobb, Wight & Norton Ship Stores & Groceries, A. Ross Weeks Crockery & Glassware, and the Eastern Express Co. The building on the left is the Custom House Block, built in 1853. When the Custom House moved out the building was known as the G.A.R Hall. The building on the right is the Wilson and White Block, built in 1856 by Captain William Wilson and Jonathan White, a lime manufacturer. It was also know as Phoenix Hall because of the large hall on the third floor.

The Crockett Block, on Main Street at the foot of Warren Street, contained Ephraim Perry's Dye House, the Union Store, and the North Bank. Granite Hall, on the top floor, was the site of many Temperance meetings and banquets. The Crockett Block was built by Charles Crockett in 1854, on the site where Deacon George Thomas had built his famous clipper ships, including the fast and beautiful Red Jacket. The Crockett Block burned to the ground in 1994.
