Horses pulled a hayrack and hay loader over a windrow of hay. The hay loader picked up the hay and deposited it on the hayrack, where workers used pitchforks to distribute the load.
The hay loader was also used as a pea vine loader. After loading the vines on a wagon they were taken to the viner, a machine that separated the peas from the vines. Some pea vines were later fed to the cows, but not too much because the pea vines could unacceptably flavor the milk. Unused vines were burnt in a bonfire.

Grain was harvested in the fall with the seeds still attached to the straw and stored like hay in the barn. During the winter, when there was less to do on a farm, the owner of the machine traveled from barn to barn to thresh the grain.
This threshing machine, with only the power unit visible, is positioned to do its work. As the grain was being processed it was caught in a half bushel container and then transfered into bags.

L.
This horse pulled wood snow plow would cut two grooves in the snow and leave a raised "cone" in the center for the horse to walk on. The seat in front was for the teamster while a second man operated the levers and wheels in back. The levers operated the wings and the wheels operated the blade that cut 6" - 8" deep grooves for sleigh runners. When the spring came the roads became useless for vehicles and the only way to travel was by horseback.
This plow was built by L.F. Whittier.

The McDowell Garment Drafting Machine was a tool for the professional dress maker, not the home sewer.
The McDowell Garment Drafting Machine was promoted as a tool that benefitted both customer and dress maker as it eliminated the need for dress forms and fitting sessions.
The company's motto for the tool was, "More work and better pay."
Originally patented in 1879, the McDowell Garment Drafting Machine Company revised the tool in response to changing fashions and efforts to simplify the tool.

Houghton Sulky Co., Marion, Ohio
In 18th century England any single passenger vehicle was called a sulky because a single seat indicated that the passenger was anti-social and was thought to be "sulking." In the 19th century, the sulky evolved into the familiar two-wheeled racing vehicle like the one pictured.

Rabbet planes cut rabbets or grooves in a board. A rabbet is a cut along an edge of a board enabling two complimentarily cut boards to form an overlapping joint, such as a tongue and groove. Each particular type of cut, width or profile, required a different plane.
A rabbeting plane with moving fillister has an adjustable fence and blades of different widths, an advancement in plane design so that this one plane could perform the function of many rabbet planes. In the 1890s this wood plane was further refined into a steel stocked plane with many adjustable parts and blades called a combination plane. The combination plane, exemplified by the Stanley no. 55, (see MMN #11493} replaced a tool chest full of rabbet and molding planes. The combination plane has, in turn, been replaced by the power router with it dozens of bits.

Wood planes were made of hard wood such as walnut cherry or maple. Simple planes were merely chisels held in a smoothed block of wood by a wedge. The block of wood controlled the depth of the blade so that only a shaving of wood was removed with each pass of the plane. Types of planes can generally be broken into four basic categories: smoothing, molding, beading and beveling. In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries a master carpenter would have a hundred or more finely tuned specialized wood planes. In the second half of the nineteenth century, planes with iron soles started to be made. Later, planes were made almost completely of iron then steel.
Smoothing planes ran in size from the 6 8 smoothing plane, to the 12 17 jack plane, to the 60 72 coopers jointer. This 26 long plane is a long or trying plane. The long stock, or body of the plane, made it possible to smooth the entire length of a board.

The Aroostook Potato Seed Cutter had four different cutting patterns for different sized potatoes. Foot powered, it was intended to cut seed more efficiently than could be done by hand, but in practice, a skilled hand cutter (see MMN # 12950) was faster than this mechanized system.

To use this seed cutter, one sat in the chair and sliced the potatoes by pushing them against the knife blade. When used by a skilled cutter, hand cutting was faster than many mechanized systems. When cutting potatoes for seed, it was necessary to cut them so that each piece had at least one eye in it.
Cutting seed by hand enabled the cutter to make informed decisions on how best cut a potato because potatoes are irregular and mechanized systems could not alter their cutting pattern to accommodate the unique qualities of each potato.

Softwood potato barrels were made with cedar staves and bottom and ash hoops. In later years, when ash for hoops was becoming scarce, wire was used for the lower hoop.
In dry harvest seasons, the staves loosened, making the barrel harder to roll as the staves shifted against one another.

When the United States entered Word War One in 1916 there was a shortage of army rifles for training infantry. To help the situation, the government requested new draftees to bring an old broom with them. The army provided a workable bolt action block and, if available, a Civil War era bayonet to aid in training.

American Tobacco Company
Lucky Strike cigarettes were originally sold in a green package. In the late 20s and early 30s, women began smoking in greater numbers. The Lucky Strike brand, however, was unfashionable because its green package clashed with the fashions of the day. But the company worked to make it desirable for women.
During World War Two, the green and red package changed to white and red because, it was claimed, the green pigment was needed for war purposes.

Seed potatoes are potatoes grown under careful conditions to minimize diseases to produce healthy clones of parent plants. Batches of potatoes that were found to have too much evidence of disease were still suitable for eating and were sold as table stock. Shipped whole, seed potatoes are cut up so that each piece has at least one "eye" in it.

This lunch bucket was used by train engineer Herb Bull when he worked for the Canadian Pacific Railroad. H. C. B. is stenciled on the top for Herb C. Bull.
Similar buckets were also used to carry eggs to the local store to be bartered for store credit. The bucket was often filled with oats to cushion the eggs and reduce breakage. Small farms were often subsistence farming operations; many kept forty to fifty chickens to produce meat and eggs for both barter and home use.

A variant of the traditional dash churn. While the agitator of a dash churn was plunged up and down, in this churn the handle pivots on a pin in the lid as it is moved back and forth, swishing the cream with a paddle.
This churn held about 6 quarts of sour cream to turn into butter.

The barrel churn was a major advance over the the traditional dash churn. This model was designed to be turned end over end by a hand crank.
Several quarts of sour cream were poured into the churn, sealed and then the barrel was turned. Barrel turns had no internal agitators, just the action of the barrel was enough to turn the cream to butter.
Barrel churns were used on larger home farm operations where the butter production was intended for more than just home consumption.

Before homogenization of milk was common, milk and cream separated in the bottle. If one wanted "whole milk," one shook the bottle. If the cream was wanted for other purposes the special "cream top" spoon was lowered into the neck of the bottle and used to block the "skim milk" while pouring off the cream.

Rutenber Electric Company
As the name of this toaster suggests, the "Marion Giant Flipflop" toasted one side of the slice of bread at a time. When done on one side, one flipflopped the bread to toast the second side. The toaster toasted two slices at a time.
The product slogan was, "Make toast your breakfast food."
In addition, the cord is detachable so the toaster can be used without electricity by putting it on a wood-fired stove.

This flour barrel is clamped to a steel rod that runs from the bottom of the cabinet to the bottom of the counter top making a pivot point so the barrel can be swung in and out from under the counter top. Easy access to and storage of flour was essential for a farmer's wife who may need to make ten or more loaves of bread each day to feed her family and the farm workers.
This 200 pound barrel of Wingold vitamin B enriched flour was made by the Bay State Milling Company of Winona, Minnesota.

Hot coals were placed in the drawer. The foot warmer was carried by the handle and placed on the floor of the sleigh or pung. A rider would warm his or her feet by resting them on the warmer. While effective, warmers with live embers always risked setting clothes or other materials on fire since most were made of wood, fabric, leather or furs.

Dorothy Campbell, born in 1922, learned butter making from her mother, Amber Beatrice Stockford Shaw, in the 1930s.
Her mother's butter was either sold for 25 cents per pound or bartered at the local store in Littleton for supplies such as sugar, molasses, flour and vinegar.
While attending Ricker Classical Institute, Houlton, Campbell worked for a neighbor during summer vacations for $1 per day making butter and other duties. After graduation she continued working for her neighbor to earn money to study nursing.
When she completed her nurses training in 1946, she married and made butter on their own farm from 1946-1958 which she sold at Way's Market, Houlton, for $1 per pound.

Stanley
A rabbeting plane is a tool with moving fillister that has an adjustable fence and blades of different widths. This was an advancement in plane design so that one plane could perform the function of many planes.
In the 1890s that wood plane was further refined into a steel stocked plane with many adjustable parts and blades called a combination plane.
This combination plane, exemplified here by the Stanley no. 55 with its set of blades, replaced a tool chest full of rabbet and molding planes.
The combination plane has, in turn, been replaced by the power router with dozens of bits.

A molding was used to make molding for a room or piece of furniture. A mater carpenter would have a different plane for each size of a particular style of molding.

Smoothing planes ran in size from the 6 8 smoothing plane ti the 12 17 jack plane, to the 60 72 coopers jointer. This 15 long jack plane has a wood stock with metal fittings. The jack plane was used for starting the smoothing process. Its blade was curved to enable it to cut deeper than a flat blade, making quick work of the rough first phase of smoothing a board. A trying, or trueing, plane would then be used to further smooth the board

A spoke shave was used by a wheelwright to shape the spokes for a wagon wheel. This early design is a wood handle with a metal blade. The blade has tangs on its ends that are bent 90 degrees. After sharpening the blade, it is fastened to the handle by pounding the tangs through holes in the handle. The ends of the tangs can be seen protruding through the top of the spoke shave handle. Later designs of spoke shaves were made of steel and used screws to secure the blade.

The Victor VV50 Victrola was made between 1921 and 1924. It was replaced by the VV35. (see MMN# 14620)
Acoustic phonographs were completely mechanical, there were no electrically powered elements. When played, the needle rode in the groves on the record. The variations in the groove moved the needle to reproduce the original sounds vibrations. The needle was attached to a diaphragm which vibrated, reproducing, to a limited degree, the original sound. The tone arm is a hollow tube which, attached to the back of the wooden cabinet, acted as a megaphone.

"jillpoke" is a term that has various meanings depending on the occupation under discussion. In relation to this artifact, a jillpoke is a device that is attached to the end of a heavy work sled by the ring and the other end left to drag on the ground behind the sled. Fully loaded with logs or other heavy loads, a sled being pulled up hill could pull the horses back down hill. A jillpoke behind the sled, however, digs into the ice and snow anytime the sled starts to slip back down hill so the horses can rest a bit before continuing up the hill.

Kriss Kross Corp. of St. Louis, Missouri, made this single-edge razorblade sharpener.
Turning the crank lowers the blade to the stone. As the cranking continues, the blade rises, turns itself over, and then is lowered to sharpen on the other side. The process continues until one decides the blade is sharp enough.
This device thwarted Gillette's original goal of developing an essential, single-use disposable item.

This dump rake, ca. 1910, located one mile north of Monticello on Route One, was originally designed to be pulled by horses but was later adapted to be pulled by a tractor.
A dump rake was so called because after raking the hay for a short distance, a lever operated mechanism raised the rake tines to "dump" the hay. The rake was pulled back and forth across a field and on each pass the hay was pulled into line with previously dumped piles making a windrow.
After the field was raked into windrows, the dump rake was pulled down along a windrow dumping the hay into piles along the way. These piles were later loaded onto hay wagons and taken to storage.

This kind of farm work wagon served a variety of purposes. The single-reach pole, or stretcher, that connects the front and rear wheels could be extended or shortened (from approximately 10 to 14 feet) to best serve the desired function.

Frank Longstaff's seed potato farm, in Crystal, about a mile west of Island Falls on route 159 at Belvedere Crossing.
Fred Fogg, who lived across the street from the Longstaff Farm, is standing between two horses with his hands folded. He is wearing a hat and suspenders.
Frank Longstaff began the farm in the 1910s and it was later acquired by Jake Shur and then owned by his son, Arthur Shur.
Seed potatoes are potatoes grown under careful conditions to minimize diseases to produce healthy clones of parent plants. After harvesting, each potato is cut up so that each piece has at least one "eye" in it. These pieces are sold to other farmers to plant.

William H. Cumming
William H. Cumming, a pharmacist in Houlton for more than sixty years, wrote some details about the early history of the Houlton airport.
His brother, Irvin Cumming, was the first station manager for Boston & Maine Airways at the Houlton Airport.
William was a cooperative observer for the Weather Service for more than 50 years.
Over the years he noted events in his diary. In about 1990 he transcribed notes from his diary about events relating to the airport to share with others.
