This picture depicts Cataract Falls and the old gristmill at right on the original Pepperell Mill site in the early 1900s.
The gristmill contained four runs of stones, two bolting machines, and a corn and plaster mill. It was the last of its kind to survive on the Saco River until it was torn down in 1917.

Photo taken from Elm Street in Biddeford looking down Gooch Street during the Spring freshet (melting snows) in April 1885. Gooch Street had a broad array of businesses: grocers, a blacksmith, a cannery, flour and grain warehouses. Gooch Street used to run into Main Street at its eastern end via a bridge that disappeared in the early 20th century. Today Saco Island developers have plans for a pedestrian walkway with a new bridge connecting the split street once again.

The Salmon Falls Dam on the Saco River between Buxton and Hollis. The view is upriver and toward the Buxton side.
The Lt. Samual Merrill house is in the background. The dam was close to where the Route 202 bridge was later constructed.
There were mills on the Buxton side earlier. They may have been swept down river due to floods by the time of this photo.
Log drives were common on the Saco river in the early 1900s but by the 1950s they had diminished in size. Log drives became illegal in 1967.

Photo portrait of Corporal Charles Milliken in the uniform of the Thornton Academy Cadet Corps.
The Cadet Corps was a school drill team that existed between 1889 and 1893. The first members had caps as their only unifying garment.
After many fund-raising events and performances, enough money was raised for uniforms. At the height of the corps' popularity, trustees of the school were encouraged to require every boy to become a cadet.
By 1893, however, emphasis was on school sports and the drill team became a less popular activity.

Vaughn Dennett, a philanthropist and future president of the York Institute who was known for his eccentric outfits, poses in the back row on the far left. This photograph depicts Old Orchard Beach Center at the turn of the twentieth century. On East and West Grand Avenues stands the famous Velvet Hotel (where the Grand Victorian currently stands), as well as the Alberta Hotel and Seashore House on Old Orchard Street. The railroad crossing sign appears to be where it still is today. The pier can be viewed in the background, appearing much longer than it is today. Judging by the photograph, horse and buggy was still a popular method of transportation, but not for long.

This photograph shows what was left of downtown Old Orchard after the big fire of 1907. People are crowded on the pier, who had been trapped out there during the fire. Luckily, due to some quick thinking, men started ripping up the wooden planks on the pier so that the fire would not reach and destroy them too. Many men and women caught the train back to Boston with nothing but the clothes on their backs. Multiple hotels and businesses burned on August 15, 1907, many of which were never rebuilt.

The Fiske Hotel (1882-1907) held 300 guests, and was built on the site of the previous Fiske Hotels. It had its own telegraph office, telephones, laundry, orchestra, billiard hall, bowling alley, and 130 rooms on six floors. It also had its own baseball team. There were two Fiske Hotels prior to the third and final, that were destroyed by fires. This last hotel opened on July 1, 1882, but fell to the fire of 1907 like so many others.

Just one of the many buildings damaged during the Great Main Street Fire of 1912, the Saco House was consumed. All of the Saco House guests were awakened and led out safely. Horses in Chadborne's Stable (in the rear of the hotel) were also saved. Wooden buildings were leveled, but the walls of the brick Saco House stayed intact, though its interior was ruined. Later, Atkinson's Furniture bought the structure and saved most of the original exterior.

In 1778, Captain Seth Spring, a veteran of the Battle of Bunker Hill, built this imposing house, now at 14 Elm Street, on Spring's Island.
The building became a well-known inn, where stages stopped on the Boston-Portland Road. French general Lafayette was a guest here in 1825.
Toward the end of the century, the structure was converted into a tenement. Subsequently it was restored and today serves as the office building for Deering Lumber.

A portrait of Edward Staples Cousens Smith, the only child of James G. Cousens Smith (a merchant, later mayor and state legislator) and Eva Lorena Staples Smith, born in Biddeford. E.S.C. Smith attended Bowdoin College as a chemistry major, graduating in 1918. Too small for the army, he devoted a year to First World War work with Dupont, then entered MIT for graduate study. After one semester he transferred to Harvard, where he studied geology. Despite additional graduate study during two years as a teaching assistant at Radcliffe College, Smith never obtained a PhD. He was a member of the geology department at Union College in New York for many years.

Five men discussing a cow. Charles E. Moody, the photographer, was born in Saco in 1859 and moved to Newark, New Jersey as a young teenager.
He became active in the local amateur camera club while living in New Jersey.
The cities on the Saco, however, remained a personal and artistic touchstone for him. He brought his camera with him on extended summer vacations to his hometown. Around 1913 he returned to Saco permanently. This image may have been taken in New Jersey or Maine.

circa 1910
Though many of Charles Moody's photographs convey a sense of nostalgia about the past, he did not shy away from depicting modern life. Among his glass plate negatives are many photographs of people posed in their cars. This picture was taken at the corner of Main Street and Storer Street in Saco, where the old roller skating rink provides a reference to an earlier mode of conveyance.

A view of the amusement rides and vacationers along the beach near the Fiske Hotel on Old Orchard Beach.
The Fiske Hotel (1882-1907) held 300 guests, and was built on the site of the Old Fiske and St. Cloud Hotels, which burned on November 10, 1881. It had its own telegraph office, telephones, laundry, orchestra, billiard hall, bowling alley, and 130 rooms on six floors. It also had its own baseball team. There were two Fiske Hotels prior to the third and final, that both were destroyed by fires. This last hotel opened on July 1, 1882, but was doomed to fall to the great conflagration of 1907 like so many others.
