James Otis Kaler of South Portland was a noted author of children's books at the turn of the 20th century. He wrote under the pseudonym James Otis.
He served as Superintendent of Schools in South Portland during the early 1900s.

Silver Beach cottage, also known as "Toot's cottage", the summer residence of James Otis Kaler on Breakwater Farm (opposite Richmond Island) in Cape Elizabeth.
The cottage, on what is now known as the Sprague property, is no longer in existence.

Informal portrait of Captain Benjamin Thompson (1834-1904), in retirement, in the garden of his home on Elm Street in Winterport.
Thompson was a deep water ship captain for many years, sailing primarily for the Weld line. His commands included the <em>Progressive Age, Sportsman</em> and the <em>Great Admiral.</em>

At regularly scheduled meetings members presented literary and historical topics of interest for discussion. They are pictured at the First Baptist Church.
Amy (Scamman) Kaler, wife of author James Otis Kaler, is first from left in the front row. Her sister Lizzie Scamman is back row center.

The <em>The Charming Sally: Privateer schooner of New York: a tale of 1765</em>, a Revolutionary War historical novel, was written by South Portland author James Otis Kaler under pseudonym James Otis.

Ruth Pillsbury
James Otis Kaler was a journalist who in 1902 became superintendent of South Portland schools. In 1880-1881, he serialized the story of Toby Tyler in Harper's Young People Magazine. It was a literary success. Subsequently, Kaler (under the pseudonym James Otis) wrote over 175 children's books.

James Otis, the pen name of James Otis Kaler of South Portland, wrote <em>Toby Tyler: or ten weeks with a circus,</em> published in 1881. The edition shown was published in 1937. Everett Shinn was the illustrator.
Toby was admired for his spunk and the books were quite popular in the 1880s.

Tobias Thompson was a prominent citizen of Winterport and a leader of the drive to carve Winterport from the original settlement of Frankfort in 1860.
He was the uncle of James Otis Kaler, noted Maine author, and of Benjamin Thompson, a deep sea skipper who captained the ship <em>Great Admiral</em>.

Amy Luella Scamman was the wife of James Otis Kaler, Maine author of children's books. She is shown with the couple's sons, Stephen, who was born in 1901; and Otis, born in 1903.
Her cousin Frank Scamman was active in Democratic politics in the late 1800s. For many years the two branches of the Scamman family occupied portions of the Scamman farm, where Scamman Street is in South Portland today.

The photo shows Addie Elmira Kaler and her brother, Harry Kaler. They were first cousins of James Otis Kaler, Maine author of children's books at the turn of the last century.
Their father, John Marion Kaler, was proprietor of the Southgate Inn (now the Black Point Inn) at Prout's Neck in Scarborough.
Harry died in the Spanish flu epidemic of 1918. In 1929 Addie married Edward Griswold Vaill, prominent Portland attorney. Until her death she resided in the house in Scarborough that is now the Kaler-Vaill retirement home for women.

John Marion Kaler was the brother of James Otis Kaler, noted Maine author of children's books. This house, located on Prout's Neck in Scarborough, was originally known as the Coolbroth house after the family of Mr. Kaler's wife, Elmira Coolbroth.
Ownership later passed to his daughter, Addie Elmira Kaler. On her death it became the Kaler-Vaill retirement home for women, named after Addie (Kaler) Vaill and her husband, Edward Griswold Vaill.
The picture is believed to have been taken in the early 1930s, during the lifetime of John M. Kaler.
