Charles Farrar Brown, who wrote and performed as "Artemus Ward," was the son of Levi and Caroline E. Brown of Waterford.
Levi died when Charles was 13, and Caroline apprenticed him to a printer in Littleton, New Hampshire (she had previously done the same with his older brother Cyrus). He went on to work in Skowhegan and Norway, Maine, then in Boston, and then meandered west, moving from job to job as printers did in the 1840's and 1850's.
At age 23, in 1857, he arrived at the Cleveland Plain Dealer offices where he became associate editor. In 1861 he became editor of the leading national comic weekly Vanity Fair, in New York.
Ward was by that time reinventing himself as a comic "lecturer," and when the magazine failed he turned to full-time performing. By the end of the Civil War he was regarded as America's best humorist, and when he was able to travel to London to perform at the end of 1866 it was a confirmation of his status.
But he was already seriously ill with tuberculosis when he arrived in England, and died on March 6, 1867, aged 33, mourned on both sides of the Atlantic.

This photograph depicts school children and their teacher at the South Waterford School around 1890. On the front of the photograph is written "School at So. Waterford, Around 1890 Should Say", and on the back of the photograph, in pencil, is written "Jennie M. Plummer" (probably the teacher) and "Waterford School." It is suspected that these annotations were made by Flora Hamlin Abbott, founding member of Waterford Historical Society.
The South Waterford School was a two-room school that was held in the lower level of the Bear Mt. Grange/Universalist Church building.

This photograph shows the Hamlin carding mill in South Waterford as it looked around the turn of the century. In 1887 W.K. Hamlin purchased the Hapgood Carding Mill, in which early 19th century English wool machinery was still in operation and an original waterwheel mechanism was also still used.
The wool business, in Waterford, proved to be seasonal and responsive to customer demand. The W.K Hamlin family lived in the house across the street from the Carding Mill. The carding mill was one of several businesses run by W.K.Hamlin, including a lumber mill, a box business, and a creamery.
In the 1960s, the carding mill was taken apart, moved, and reassembled at Old Sturbridge Village in Massachusetts. It was used there as part of the 1820s Village museum.

This photograph of the Lake House was taken around the turn of the century, before paved roads were common in Waterford.
The Lake House, built in 1797, was the first building built in the area known as Waterford Flat. It was constructed by Eli Longley, a prominent businessman, who operated the property as a tavern and an inn. Lake House started out as a one story frame house and was used afterwards as the ell to the two story addition. The second story of the ell housed the ballroom and hotel post office.

A trapper posed in front of a variety of fur pelts along a wall.
The fur business in Waterford started with a few dozen pelts brought in to the area by trappers. It quickly grew to a few hundred pelts a year and by 1952 the number of pelt being brought in to Waterford by trappers annually reached into the thousands. The pelts were obtained from Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, and parts of Massachusetts each year. The first fur building in Waterford was built in 1942.

This photograph of a chair being auctioned off at the Sumner Stone Tavern, at the corner of Mill Hill Road and Passaconaway Road in Waterford, was taken around the turn of the twentieth century.
The Sumner Stone Tavern was run out of the home of Sumner Stone. The building later became Camp Passaconaway, from 1932 until it became Camp Joseph in 1960. Camp Passaconaway was founded by Arthur G. and Mary L. J. Carlson, to develop leaders of men. “Noblesse oblige” was the camp's motto and only boys with above average scholastic and social records, regardless of affluence, were chosen to attend.

Waterford resident, Edgar Stone, better known as "Ned," designed and built this ice cutting machine to saw through 12 inches or more of ice on Keoka Lake (Tom Pond) at Waterford Flat in the 1920s.
The machine was patented in the United States on March 4, 1919 and in Canada on June 10, 1919. The apparatus was a gasoline engine and a circular saw mounted on a substantial sled, capable of being pushed by hand.
