Over a two-week period beginning March 9, 1936, New England was the recipient of three storms which drenched the region, melted the snow left from the winter, and caused the ice on the rivers to break up and flow quickly downstream. This image depicts the flood as it affected the Texaco in Winslow.

During the flood of March, 1936, the Kennebec River flowed almost even with the top of the dam and just beneath the Waterville-Winslow bridge with the Lockwood Company mills in the background. The bridge did not survive the storm due to the volume of water beneath it and the impact of blocks of ice hitting it. The photo was taken from the railroad bridge between Waterville and Winslow. The flood of March, 1936 was quite a scene. This is how it appeared behind the car shops at the Maine Central Railroad station on College Avenue in Waterville. This postcard depicts the vehicular and trolley bridge connecting Waterville and Winslow as it appeared while under construction around 1911. The bridge spanned the Kennebec River and was then the southernmost bridge between the towns.
To the left of the bridge on the Waterville side are the buildings of the Lockwood Company where employees spun and wove cotton into millions of yards of cloth per year.

The Elmwood Hotel
First opened in 1850, the Elmwood Hotel in Waterville was once considered one of the best in the state. Located near the Maine Central Railroad station and Waterville's Main Street, the hotel boasted of fine bedrooms and suites, a superb dining room, and accessibility to all of the area's finest attractions.
After extolling on the amenities available at the Elmwood, this pamphlet advertises the attractions of "Waterville, the Garden City of Maine," and the rest of the area and details the cost and time to get to them. The hotel succeeded until travelers began using the highway rather than the train, which coincided with the decline of Waterville's Main Street and rise of stores away from the City's center. The building itself was demolished during Waterville's Urban Renewal project in the 1960s.

During the 1902 Centennial Celebration in Waterville, the newly built City Hall got decked out in bunting in celebration of Waterville's history. The brick building replaced the earlier City Hall, a wooden structure which became the city's armory. The new version featured office space on the first floor and an opera house on the top floor.

All of Waterville, and even people from Winslow, came to the parade during Waterville's centennial celebration in 1902. The Hollingsworth & Whitney Company, now Scott Paper Company, had a float in the parade held on June 24. Although the mill itself was in Winslow, many of its employees lived and shopped in Waterville, making it an integral part of Waterville's economy.
In the 1902 Centennial History of Waterville, William Abbot Smith described the float, saying, "The Hollingsworth & Whitney Company had a notable exhibit drawn by six powerful horses. The lower part of the float was made up of the various kinds of paper their mills turn out and on the top of all was a giant roll of paper 148 inches wide, weighing 5,250 pounds and measuring seven and one-half miles in length."

On June 24, 1902, Waterville wrapped up its centennial celebration with a parade. Many of the entries in the parade were floats put together by local businesses. One of these was the Clukey & Libby Company float. The Clukey & Libby Company ran a large department store on Main Street.
According to the 1902 Centennial History of Waterville, "Clukey & Libby Co. had for representation, including twenty-four boys in gray dusters with red advertising umbrellas; a float with twelve young ladies in white and rose sunshades, the team being decorated with 500 poppies and drawn by four gray horses with white harnesses."

On June 24, 1902, Waterville held a parade to wrap up the festivities of the centennial celebration. The floats included W. B. Arnold's hardware and plumbing store, which is pictured here in the center of the photo. L. H. Soper had a float as well. He, according to the 1902 Centennial History of Waterville, "put in a beautiful float in yellow and white on which rode nine girls. The sides and ends of the float formed open oval panels and the effect was charming."

The Central Maine Fair was held in Waterville starting in 1904. The fair organizers tried to maintain a decency level at the Central Maine Fair so that, "the most fastidious," presumably these boys and their mothers, "may attend without fear of being shocked."
In the foreground, a booth is being set up with young boys as onlookers, the next booth has a man setting up a viewer, and across the way a large tent displays the $10,000 dollar French Beauty Show, Honest Bill's Wonder Show, Madam Fremont Queen of Palmists, and a photography tent with old fashioned tintypes made "while you wait."

The Hollingsworth & Whitney Company mill, photographed here around 1900, manufactured paper products in Winslow. The mill produced 235 tons of paper per day. Business was so successful at the time that the owners of the mill opened a "club house" on site so that the employees could relax while playing pool, bowling, reading in the library, or swimming in the pool. Many of these employees lived in Waterville and walked to work every day.

Three bridges span the Kennebec River between Waterville and Winslow. The middle one, pictured here, is for railroad traffic and was first built in 1854. While the river and its roaring waters had once split the two towns from each other, the bridges allowed for ease of travel across the water. The Maine Central Railroad utilized this bridge, bringing trains to and from the hub of rail travel for central and northern Maine.

The original footbridge across the Kennebec, pictured here, lasted less than a year before it was swept away in a flood on December 15, 1901. The bridge was paid for by the Honorable William T. Haines and Harvey D. Eaton, Esq. Spanning the river between Temple Street in Waterville and the Hollingsworth & Whitney Company mill in Winslow, it proved useful for the employees of the mill who lived in Waterville for getting to and from their work and homes.

When they contributed to Waterville's industry in the form of water power for manufacturing, rivers and streams in Waterville were quite useful. This was not always, however, the case. In this image, the Messalonskee Stream has overflown its banks and flooded boathouses on the shoreline. Colby College, among others, kept boathouses on the Messalonskee.

Before Colby College moved to its current campus on Mayflower Hill, Chemical Hall was the home of chemistry lectures and labs, the president's office, and a faculty meeting room. The building first opened in 1899 and was then seen as "a splendid building, with the best equipment for undergraduate courses in chemistry to be found in any small college," according to former Colby Historian Ernest Marriner in his book, "The History of Colby College." The Hall was one of the final buildings on the old Colby campus to be sold in the late 1950s after the school moved its campus to Mayflower Hill.

Memorial Hall, the first college building to be dedicated in honor of the Civil War, was home to the library on the old Colby College campus on College Avenue in Waterville. Built in 1867, Memorial Hall also housed the campus's chapel and an alumni room. The rubblestone used to build the Hall was quarried a mile west of campus. When Colby moved to Mayflower Hill and no one would buy nor could anyone raise the funds to save the building, it was razed in 1966.

Fort Halifax, first built in 1754 by English settlers on the Kennebec River for protection from hostile Native Americans in the area around what is now Winslow, is a National Historic Landmark and the oldest blockhouse in the United States.
Although it was dismantled in a flood in 1987, the original logs were recovered and pieced back together. The fort is pictured here in the early 1900s.

Waterville's Main Street, the western side of which is pictured here in the early 1900s, was very different before the influx of technology now normal in today's world. Horses and their carts brought people and goods to and from Main Street, where people could shop for bicycles, get them repaired, have clothes laundered, visit a music shop, or buy ice cream. The trolley cable and tracks indicate that people used that mode of transportation to get to and from Main Street as well.

Much has changed along Waterville's Main Street since it was photographed here in the early 1900s. Here, a man and a woman stand in front of Blanchard's Music Store, where shoppers could by pianos, organs, bicycles, and sewing machines. Next door is a bicycle factory and repair shop and an Advent Hall and store advertising "Job Printing." The street itself is paved with cobblestones and has trolley tracks running down it.

On December 14, 1900, Waterville High School held a ceremony to celebrate the students "receiving Honorary Parts for Fall Term." The afternoon included readings from students of their own essays and orations of famous writings as well as musical interludes. The small number of students being honored is indicative of the smaller percent of the Waterville population that chose to pursue a high school education at the time. Many young people chose to go to work at one of Waterville's mills rather than continue their education to this level.

On March 29, 1900, Waterville High School hosted a debate between their debaters and Skowhegan High School's. The topic up for debate was, "Resolved: 'That the attitude of the present administration in regard to the Philippines is conducive to the best interests of the American people.'"
The Chairman of the Waterville Board of Education chaired the debate and it was judged by Colby College President Nathaniel Butler, Forrest Goodwin, a lawyer from Skowhegan, and Professor Curtis M. Geer of Bates College. Waterville argued the affirmative position and Skowhegan took the negative side. Public speaking events like this were a common part of the high school experience at the time.

Ticonic Water Power and Manufacturing Company
Prior to the existence of the Ticonic Water Power and Manufacturing Company, there were about fifty owners of water rights below the falls of the Kennebec River in Waterville. In 1866, a number of leading men in the town decided to form a company to harness a large part of that water power.
This document details their plans to form this company and the notes taken at annual meetings in years following. In 1874 the company sold its rights to the land and water power to the Lockwood Company, which manufactured cotton cloth on the site until 1955.

The Kennebec River flowed close beneath the railroad bridge between Waterville and Winslow during the March, 1936 flood. Unlike other bridges in the area and around New England, the bridge survived the flood intact. In the background of the photo is Waterville with Main Street and Front Street buildings visible to the left of the bridge and the Head of Falls neighborhood visible through the middle section of the bridge. The photographer was standing on another bridge connecting Waterville and Winslow, which later washed out due to the flooding and impact of the ice on the structure.

Floodwaters in March, 1936 reached buildings in the Head of Falls neighborhood in Waterville. Formally a housing area for workers at the area mills and their families, the neighborhood was razed as part of Waterville's Urban Renewal program in the 1960s. The photographer took the photo from the railroad bridge between Waterville and Winslow. This bridge, unlike another in Waterville and some around New England, survived the flood.

Sanborn Map Company
In 1911, the area known as "The Plains" was a neighborhood almost entirely populated by recent French-Canadian immigrants to Waterville from the Beauce region of Quebec.
French-Canadian immigration to Waterville began in the mid-1800s. These first immigrants spread the word of plentiful jobs to be found in the town and so entire families moved from their farms to this neighborhood.
Given the tight-knit nature of the community, the language barrier of many of the residents, and the fact that many of them worked in mills within walking distance, there were plentiful small shops in the neighborhood run by other recent immigrants, allowing people to do their shopping close to home and in their native tongue.
This map shows the density of the population in this area, as well as many of the shops and stores.
The map is one of a set of maps of the City of Waterville produced by the Sanborn Map Company.
